We knew what you meant, but it was still funny as heck, and an opportunity that couldn't be passed up.
Bill was that an original Q or R code 1969 Cougar that you had? I had (sold it a couple of years ago), a 1969 XR7 with Super CJ and 4 speed, and ram air. Mine had the W code, or 4.30:1 ring and pinion gears. It was one of 53 according to Kevin Marti.
Awesome Cougar, I'm a little partial to them. Personally, building a FE is too expensive, the only reason I would install one would be for the wow factor. My boss races stroked 427 fe's, a stroked boss 9, and a 427 Cammer. They all cost atleast double what my stroked windsors do. Here is an example of what a somewhat budget oriented Windsor can do. All parts are off the shelf, cam included
The maverick has been 10 teens with a short lived 363, and 10.40's with a pump gas 347. Just finishing up on the windsor swap and AJE front end. The 412 is identical to my 427 except for the stroke, so I am expecting 9.20's or so since it is 300 lbs lighter than the Cougar.
I`ve seen more than one 408w in all kinds of ford products mildly built in 2800lb cars go 10s ALL DAY LONG,cheapest, most powerful engine to build right now.Take a well built 408 in a fox body set up properly & you can out run 1/2 the cars at the trk,the most deadly combination going, light car w/ a lot of torque.
Can't beat an FE engine. A 428CJ is a good engine had one in a 69 Cyclone. Body rusted down around the engine. Put it in a 73 Ford 4x4 pickup. Burned a hole in a piston. took it out and installed a regular 428. Still have the truck but I wouldn't put one in a Maverick or Comet.
Ray, that thing runs very good .Iam building a 418w for this year and hope to run some 9 sec passes this summer. What track do you run at? PS How do you like the AJE front end ?
So far I am very happy with the AJE kit, they have been very helpful. Now I can install whatever engine I want. Really, the main reason I went with the kit was to install a decent header. I'm running the 240 high ports, so they need the bigger header.
I seen many of 289's do the same on the street. I agree the 390 is no boat anchor. The 67 Fairlane GT was a bad boy you didn't want to mess with. I seen them spank some 427's and 428's on the street.
Ray, I am running a set of older twisted wedge R heads 206 runners with some good port work.I sent them to FOX LAKE and had them flowed. Flow numbers were 350 at .700 lift, should make decent power. I couldn't afford the AJE front end so I had a custom set of headers made with 2'' primaries and 3 1/2 '' collecters turned out very nice.
