I need all new seat belts... '74 with a bench. Do I go to the auto parts store, JCWhitney, or ??

I found this link in a search, and its about the best I ran across, but not sure if its the right fit.

Do a search for seatbelt planet here on the mmb. I have read several reviews by those who purchased from them.

eBay is 100% safe in my opinion.

Hey. I have reinstalled a bench seat back into my 74 and needed to replace the original belts. After consulting with Craig Selvey who mentioned the problems with our 74 belts I decided to go aftermarket. I purchased a 3pt retractable belt set that had had over 3 metres of belt. Enough to reach. I removed the old belts from the housing and I will be reinstalling the plate on the sill without the old belts attached. I will then mount the retractor to the rear most bolt hole with the other end of the belt / mounting point to attach to the middle hole. The front hole won't have anything mounted to other than the plate being bolted on. Because I cut my new carpet to suit the old sill mounted cover I need to use the black retractor covers. I have lined these up and will cut the shape of the new retractor into it meaning it will protrude out of the original cover. I will use a rubber u shaped trim to finish off the cut out around the new retractor. The type of trim used to cover the edge of sheet metal where holes have been cut out for intakes and air cleaners etc. I managed to thread the new buckles through the original hangers too so the belt is close to the original position. The stalks in my kits are 31.5cms long, enough to come up through the bench. Hope this helps. I will attach some pics of my progress.

Here are some pics. The pic of the cover may show the faint outline of where I will cut. I have a more precise cut off wheel to be used soon. I got a little impatient before I could but more dremel wheels. As you can see the retractor is temporarily mounted however the black trim cover will fit around it to loom as close to original as possible. Hope this helps. Cheers.

I just used the original bolt holes with no plate.

Yes I know, you were my inspiration but in my haste to put my carpet in and cutting I forgot I needed to sort out the belts. I'm using the plate and cover out of necessity unfortunately.

Please ignore the fact I broke the small section of cover closest to the b pillar. Snapped when cutting the section for the 2nd anchor point and I further stuffed it when I tried to screw it in place further down. Will fix it somehow. Anyhow, this is my solution when you don't want to take off the covers if the carpet underneath is cut etc.

Murph, that looks pretty good. 3 things...1-is the seat belt install completed yet and 2- are you content? And 3-you didn't mention where you got them...

    Thanks for the pics man!

    Thanks Northern.
    1. Yes, just finished today.
    2. I am disappointed the top edge of the retractor sits above the sill. I may still be able to cover this yet. I suppose overall I am happy because otherwise I would have to adapt belts as our 74 ones are rare and if found, brittle. Given it will never be a show car, rather a daily, I think what I've done will do the job just fine for the price.
    3. That brings me to the price. $90 aud. I purchased them from ebay australia. Item no 121547751836 is the same from the same seller.
