I'm in New Jersey and I need to have my bumpers rechromed. I want the best quality show chrome I can find. I know I'm going to have to ship them. Who do you guys recommend? Hopefully I can get a fast turn around!

A few guys from around here take their stuff to Carlisle and meet a vendor there. Of course, they have to wait until the next time the vendor is in Carlisle to pick them up, but it saves the whole shipping across the border back and forth. The guys that I know who do it this way are some of the fussiest guys I know, so quality is definitely good. The vendor is Tri-Cities. Here is a shot of his 67 Fairlane bumpers after he got them back.

Of course, this usually only works if you have lots of time on your side.

Unfortunately I don't have time so I have to ship them. I've heard of tri-cities Paul, or I thought it was tri-state but I could be wrong. Thanks for the tip Frank.

If the quality of the job is the priority, Jon Wrights is Grafton, Ohio is probably the best I have ever seen and I have used a lot of shops over 40+ years. They are somewhat fanatical about their quality.

A friend of mine got his '58 Ford bumpers done by them and they turned out extremely well.

For absolute show quality, not driver nice chrome type, As said above, John Wright's custom Chrome does great work. Also Advanced Chrome Plating in Tennessee. Neither is going to be cheap, both shops known for doing some of the best chrome work on the east coast and beyond. Last week's Detroit Autorama home of the Ridler Award, more cars there done using Advanced than any other. That has to say something doesn't it?

I had John Wrights chrome my rear bumper and boomerangs. When I heard the quote, I almost took them home. When I picked them up, they were flawless! Bottom line, expect to pay about twice as much at Jon's vs. a production shop. Expect a job and customer service about twice as good as a typical production shop.

As Car-nut points out, show chrome is not daily driver chrome. There is a substantial difference.

    Jon Wright explanation:

    HIGH:
This is our most popular plating. Parts are finished to a smoother surface and there are very few surface imperfections left in the final finish. However, it is likely that some parts may have imperfections that could only be removed with extra polishing and plating steps that would increase the stated price. If you want parts with NO FLAWS – then choose the show quality.

    SHOW:
As perfect as we can do it. Show quality pricing cannot be finalized until the job is done, since we cannot estimate what it takes to get near perfection. We will estimate at our “high quality” level. Any extra work over and above the estimated price will be added upon completion. Additional charges 5% to 50% over high quality are possible.

Mt rear bumper and boomerangs are finished to show level. They have no plating "stains" and no sub-plating scratches or imperfections whatsoever. They look like a mirror. The parts are somewhat superior in appearance than any NOS parts I've seen. About a year ago, I bought a fresh re-chromed front bumper off of another forum member. When I compared the front and rear, the front looked so inferior that I purchased another core to have Wright's re-chrome it.

that brings up another point. if the contrast is that different, then all the stock chromed, polished (stainless) and anodized parts would need to be...show chromed...

    Frank,

I am not looking to sway you or anyone else to use a specific shop. As I've stated, I have been using plating shop services since the 70's and have seen a variety of work. If you compare the chrome on an early to mid 70's car against a high end concours restoration chrome plating job, there is a marked difference in the quality and appearance of the plating, which reflects heavily on the prep. You pay a premium for concours level work that the average enthusiast might not appreciate nor require. The high end shops fulfill a niche for those wanting the highest level of bling. If one is satisfied with the appearance of an NOS plated part, then the extra $$$ is better spent somewhere else on the car.

I was just wondering why isn't it...daily driver chrome?
both my small bumper have been rechromed, have had no problems with the plating on either. I'm just asking would there be any problems running this plating on a car that is driven in the elements or is it just to be kept inside and only outside for ("car shows)?
