Apparently there is some controversy here. Some say the grabber stripes for my 72 should be gloss black and the taillight panel painted satin black and others say the stripes should be matte black. So I'm curious who is right. Personally I'm leaning towards matte black stripes since the taillight panel is satin black. I swear the original stripes on my fenders are not gloss, but I guess it could be from age... so let's hear everyone's opinion.

As a certified Old Fart when I was working in the dealer when these car were NEW . The strip and tail panel were matte or flat finish and were a bitch to wax. It you got wax on the matte / flat paint you could not get it off.

Thanks mavdog! So the side stripes and hood decals were not gloss?

Just dropped my car off at the shop today. I'm doing flat black.

I could not get them to do a '71 hood as a decal. Since it was originally painted, they did not have a decal. I asked Graphic Express to do a '71 hood as a decal and they would not. So, I custom ordered a '72 set in flat.

I asked about getting wax on it and they said to just wipe it off with wax remover and it shold be OK.

My 71 side stripes look glossy, but are actually reflective. My tail light panel is a satin black (painted) just like the hood treatment. Of course in 72, the hood changed to a vinyl decal, as you know.

The right rear quarter stripe on my car was replaced a long time ago. It was stupidly replaced with a non-reflective stripe. Here you can see the difference when I used the flash on my camera. In natural light, it looks all the same.

I've have a few sets of NOS stripes, for all different years, none have been "flat" they've all been gloss, the only one that would have been flat/ satin would have been a Stallion. But I guess you don't want to listen to me, cause I already answered your question on Facebook.

    Matte.
As far as getting wax off of them, wax and grease remover works, but a good final inspection type spray will work as well, the one we have at work is Wizard's- Mist and Shine, best thing we've found to get wax and compound off of flat paint, and even bare textured plastics.

I would have them painted and gloss.I like the look of the Matt black but it's a bitch to deal with and keep looking good and gloss is going to out last the decal or matt black paint Any day and if you get a scuff or scratch you can buff it out .

I agree , I like the matte look when it looks right but i think I will go with the stripes painted on , then clear the entire hood , less to worry about.

I know on 69 & 70 Mustangs it was more of a matte or satin. I think Ford did this to keep you from being blinded by the reflection of gloss black stripes.
