Hey all ! I am trying to surprise my son with new tires on his 77 Mercury Comet. He wants 14's on the front and wider tires on the back. What size rear tires do I get ?? Thanks in advance.
the best thing to do is grab his car and drive it the tire shop and have them try a few different sets on for you then you can see what fills up the wheel well real good or whats the just right size for you. if you swapped to a set of 15's you can still get that big small tire look and have a little better ride height IMHO 14's look too small on our cars
Thank you ! So your saying if I get all 4 tires as 15's. I will get that look of big in the back small in the front? I cant go to tire store because his front tire blew with no spare so sitting on jack now. This is foreign to me but trying to be a good mom lol. I appreciate the help ! I am looking at 521P DRAGSTAR Wheels Pacer and BFGOODRICH® - RADIAL T/A 4 /15' now. Thanks, Annie
Ha mom, does your son know you are using his handle? An economical wide 14" tire is hard to find. Does the Comet now have 14" on it front and rear? If so, you need to buy rear wheels. I have 225 70R 14s on the front with 255 60R 15s on the rear mounted on steel wheels 8" wide and4.25" backspacing. No rubbing and no air shocks.
Craig, I am having such a hard time finding 14' white walls to replace the front tires. That i decided maybe getting all new 4 tires and new rims but he wants the wider tire look in the back
Hotrod, Yes the current tires are white wall 14's. Impossible to find. So trying to please him with non white wall tires that will get him the wider look in rear. haha its his fathers handle
You have a great idea for your son, but there are a number of questions that need to be answered. The best and easiest would be to take your son " shopping" and drive to the wheel monger and yell surprise! Us car folks can be pretty picky when it comes to parting with our monies and the parts we purchase...I guess I'm saying that your best bet is to let him pick the ones he wants, that way he won't have to buy a better set down the road
JoeB, Thanks. He has 14's on the car now but we are both at a loss as to know what size tire will give him that wide look in the back. How would I know what size to put in front and back? Annie
Joe B makes a very good point! I find it hard to believe that a young man would want white wall tires of any width. My 255s on the rear are about as wide as you can go without fender lip modification and still be legal. Tires and wheels should not extend outside the cars fenders.
Hotrock, I was original looking to just replace the front flats with what was on there 14' white walls. BUT not finding them so I was switching to getting all new tires and rims but he wants wide in the back and I do not know what size for the front and back would give this look? Annie
I guess I do not understand this look you are trying to achieve. I've given you the widest tire you can legally fit on your son's Comet without fender modifications. Are you going for the go-cart look?
These are for my new 15" rims...with the backspacing on the rim and the section width of the tire I am about maxed out without using spacers...One pic shows old 14" rear and new 15" rear wheels and tires
