I like the GT emblem too. What process are u going to use to the metal part of the wheel? I need to do something to spruce up my wheel - it's not bad - just want to improve looks.

Well, I was really hoping to return it to the original brushed steel, but I don't know if I can do that or not. At the least it will get repainted with the same silver paint I used on the grille and cluster.

 

That is what I am thinking abt doing to mine - just want to get some other ideas b4 committing to paint.

 

I will start messing with it tomorrow, so I will post my results.

 

i have a sport steering wheel but the paint is bubbled up and i want to redo it also, can i ask what paint you will be using for yours

 

If I end up having to paint it, I'm going to use SEM Color Coat silver.

 

I'm diggin' the GT emblem as well, vendors are going to wonder where the sudden demand originated...

Brian used sand paper on the sport wheel in my Comet, use strokes in straight line from inside outward... I'll need to find out what grit...

I did the sand paper method a few years ago and the wheel cleaned up pretty nice. I think I will do it agn and clear coat it, hopefully that will slow moisture from getting to it and keep it looking nice.

 

I'm hoping that once I remove the paint that some sand paper will bring it back. I will definently be clear coating it, specifically satin clear.

 

Dash looks good...both color pads look good with that two-tone...That GT badge works right well

Today I worked on the steering wheel restoration. First I cut the original leather off. The rubber underneath is in great shape, no deterioration whatsoever. Now that I have the leather off, I know what thickness to order and can use it to create a template.


My hope was to strip the paint off to reveal a nice smooth steel surface. Once I stripped of a small section, I noticed that the surface was very pitted.


So, since a smooth original surface was out of the question, I used an abrasive pad on my air grinder and tried to smooth out the pits.




Once I got both sides of all three spokes relatively smooth, I then wanted to try and add the brushed steel look. I used 80 grit emery paper and drew it in one direction. It came out pretty awesome. Is it perfect? No. But I think it looks 100 times better than before and I really like it. I need to buy some bare metal clear coat to preserve the finish.
