I have a 74 Maverick c-4 tranny. Have no reverse but all forward gears are ok. I just read Paul S, poste about c4 trannys. He says it is the reverse servo, has anyone else had this problem. I was told by someone else it was the reverse band. I have checked the fluid and it is ok. I was going to do the servo tomorrow but thought I would check here first.
I'd guess it's something like 75% chance the servo fails before band, AFAIK those are the most likely suspects...
Well I think I have found problem. One on left is one that came out of car. One on right is new one. I think I see the rest of the top in hole of Tranny. Now for options any and all accepted. My thought start car put in reverse and see if it pops it out?
Yep looks like a problem... Nothing is gonna happen by putting it in gear except for dumping fluid, it's the fluid pressure on servo that operates band... If you can't fish it out with a magnet, probably have to pull pan and get it from inside... If you have to pull pan, make sure the anchor pin on opposite side is still engaged to band or it still won't have reverse...
Have you seen this before? What could have caused this besides a weak part? Something I need to address? What does the anchor pin look like? I did not think I could get to it by just dropping pan,but that is great. Thanks for your help. Sorry for all the questions.
Never seen a broken servo shaft but I'm surely no expert, mostly a back yarder that's rebuilt a few C4(years ago)... I'm foggy on some of the details... Unless it has a accumulator issue that caused it to slam into reverse or was put in reverse while rolling forward, I can't think of anything that'd break the shaft...
You will need to drop the pan and valve body to gain access. The reverse servo shaft is shown engaging the strut on the right in this photo. There is a chance that the strut is also broke. If it's still good, when you remove the broken servo post, the strut will fall out of place. Line it back up while inserting the new servo and get the servo bolts started. Loosen the adjuster on the opposite side of the band enough in order to tighten up the servo bolts and then readjust the band (search PaulS posts for specs).
Well The band is broken. The post that the servo goes into is broken off the band. It looks as if the tranny must come out to replace. Is this correct? Any suggestions?
Just so we're on the same page: in the picture - you can barely see the end of the servo shaft (machined steel) engaging the strut (cast iron looking) which in turn is engaging the band post (not brass but brass colored). If the post is indeed broken off of the band, tranny will have to come out. Something made it break....time for a rebuild.
Yes the part that the servo goes into is broken off. This tranny was rebuilt`apx. 2 years ago. I talked to the person who rebuilt it and he said he did not replace the bands. I guess I will replace the band.
A tranny that was rebuilt without replacing the bands was not rebuilt... Just jacked up. Hope you didn't pay much for it. Anything over free you probably got taken... Just sayin.. Find you a real mechanic.
