Will an 8" center chunk from a 67 mustang fit my 71 five lug Comet? This one has the extra ribbed case, pinion support and yoke, with 4.11 gears. Even if I have to rebuild it, is it worth $100? I'm running stock 2.79 gears now and it's a turd off the line.
Yes it will fit and yes it is worth it for the price. 4.11 gears are a little tall in my opinion...but you could sell those. 2.79 being a turd off the line compared to all the gas you will be burning through with the 4.11's.......I'll take the 2.79.
Thanks. I'll probably throw it in to feel it for myself. Not really worried about the gas cause I only really drive it for fun. There is no fun in a turd that can't leave skid marks!!
Earlier rear ends have the fill plug in the housing and not on the chunk. Here is a pic of a '66 rear end. Don't know what year they changed.
Not everyday...but some times 3 or 4 times a week. Since I'm retired, some days I don't go anywhere. But I'm not afraid to dive it any where. Worst thing a person can do is not drive a car and let it sit...it's not good for the car.
My car has 4.11:1 gears, 4 speed and 26" tall tires. 65 miles an hour is about 3,500 rpm so I don't do that on the near-stock engine. Zipping away from the traffic lights is a blast though! Bruce
I do!! At least that is what my speedometer says I am doing. I have 3.55 gears and I never changed the speedo gear.
Point I was getting at was being concerned with was worrying about gas mileage and the pitfalls of using these cars as a primary vehicle with 4.11 gears in the rear. The only downside I can see with 4.11's is it magnifies U joint problems with the shaft spinning faster in relation to the ground speed.
The only problem I really see with 4.11's is what the motor will be taching when trying to drive on the interstate.
I have never been happy with the stock 2.79 gear and was on the fence between 3.55's or 3.80's. I'm picking up the 4.11's tomorrow and should get a chance to install them in a few weeks. The price is right plus having two complete center sections could be a good thing while I figure out what works best for me. Once I figure it out I'll probably rebuild one of them with a Trac-Loc this winter.
You can lave too small of a gear thinking lower rpm would be giving you better mpg. When I swapped to a 3.00 from a 2.79 in my Maverick I picked up a few more mpg's. I believe the reason was the engine didn't have to work as hard to get rolling or maintain cruising speed.
