i have a 1984 ranger I purchased a few months ago with a 2.3 4 cylinder it has a header and 500 cfm carb ,the fuel pump went out and its a cheap universal rated at 2.5-4.5 psi I know this is the ,maverick forum and I do respect it cause I own 2 mavs but needed advice on what kind of pump to get and make sure I get the right psi rated pump any advice please...oh and by the way the pump still humms like its running but isn't pumping anything up to the carb ,checked the fuel filter and its clean and free flowing
make sure all the lines are clear for sure, make sure the float isn't stuck closed, take the pump out and see if you can see anything obvious wrong with it. it may just be toasted. also this is just a hunch but make sure your getting enough power to the pump. if it all points back to the pump i love my holley blue pump. its a little noisy just make sure you put some extra rubber between it and the body. runs around 6 psi and with float adjustments or a regulator your ranger should like it just fine.
Go to Ford Ranger Forum. Ask those guy's since a ranger is not a ford Maverick or Mercury Comet. If it is fuel injected that pump will not be correct.
Really? He said he respects the forum, owns two Mavericks and was simply looking for some advice. He also said it was carbureted not fuel injected. I thought it was a fair question but your reply was useless.... To the OP, any pump you can hook into the system delivering 5-7 psi with a regulator should work.
Advance auto has a low buck 5-7 psi pump that is pretty good. if nothing else it will tell you if there are any other problems...
It is my understanding that most electric pumps are pushers and therefore, needs to be located as closely as possible to the fuel tank. Is yours near the tank?
no hotrock its mounted on the fender well but I plan to install it close to the tank like u said, and yes I think this engine came with a mechanical pump but someone has did a electric pump I guess I could just go back with a mechanical
Are you saying your engine has the mounting boss for the mechanical pump except it has a block off plate installed, or is the boss non existent?
This is true though most replacements for stockish engines seem to work OK as pullers, just don't run out of gas as it may not pump when dry... AFAIK all the older 2.3 have a fuel pump opening on left side of block near front(actuated by auxiliary shaft that also operates the dist), was eliminated with introduction of EFI.. Mebby it has a later engine??
it must be aleter model engine it has no boss ,I bought this truck like it is and don't have all the history on it just something kinda different im playing with
