I know very little about cams so when Fordstrokers built my engine I told Jim to put in a cam to best suite what I wanted the car to do some drag racing and good street friendly manners. The cam specs he sent with the build sheet state that the cam has an LSA 110.9 intake lift .3590 exhaust lift .3540 intake duration 223 at .50 exhaust duration 236 at .50 intake lift at vale 1.6 rockers is .574 exhaust lift at valve 1.6 rockers is .566 Can anybody tell me anything more about how this cam functions, I always thought Fords needed more lift on the exhaust side of things
Is this a flat tapper or roller? Looks like it compensates on the exhaust by increasing the duration instead of the lift.
They pretty much always used more lift on the exhaust to make up for poor flowing exhaust ports. With good heads it's not really that way.
Roller, that is sorta the take I got from the specs, yeah the heads are great flowing according to flow chart
I would say that cam isn't very far off the mark for the intended applications requirements using those as-cast heads current exhaust flow. Port them to improve the exhaust side and things can start to change quite a bit with larger size engines. Personally.. I would add another 7 degrees or so to the intake side and also up the rocker on that side to a 1.7 ratio. Would be worth an easy and solid 2 tenths lower ET without giving up any street manners. PS. you also need a 950 cfm carb to really gett'er movin'. lol.. just kidding. Well.. not really too much. That entire combo would swallow up a bigger carb no problemo.
Dont really need 2 tenth more cant run it to full potential now due to fact that it needs a roll bar and dont want to put one in, I have never took it past 6,500 rpm what do you feel it can turn safely? In the traps now it is right at 6,500 running a 28 inch tire and 4.00 gears. I dont have a 650 carb on it anymore bumped it up to a 750dp shortly after building the engine couldnt get used to tuning the quick fuel 4 corner adjustment . Thanks for the input guys
Out of curiosity what is your ET with this combo? It looks like you have a pretty awesome set up! M.D.
Everything is a trade off, most 110 deg center cams have a nasty unfriendly rumpty rump on the street, but I see Jim cut back on the duration a little to probably make it more tolerable on the street. At 11.5 qtr. times consistently or faster the NHRA is going to make you put a roll bar in the car,you have to decide how far you want to take it,HAVE FUN.
