Issues with clank noise in rear when I put it in drive and hear a metal on metal noise, almost like with brakes. So, can a guy grease the U-joints? Brakes are more less new noise sounds more center in the rear. Does NOT happen in reverse and metal noise will happen when accelerating too, but not as loud/bad it seems. But then again I'm driving. Ideas? I have a 302 C-4 with about 88K miles, original. Thanks all.

If it's the U joint, it's kaput no doubt beyond help... Factory joints did not have a grease fitting and if orig, grease has long since dried out, lack of lubrication destroyed the joint...

strange...a u-joint would do it in drive/reverse. shift it from drive to reverse without moving in either direction.

Who makes the best U Maverick/Comet U joints, assuming they need to be replaced. Are they the same as the early Mustangs? Thanks.

Spicer, their U-joints are pretty good if you want greasable ones. If its gonna be pounded on regularly/lots of torque to the wheels get solid joints.
Also...Just do both (Front and rear) at the same time. The shaft has to come out of the car either way...

getting the right u-joint for the rear is tricky. Most parts stores get it wrong. the caps that go into the yoke of the diff are a bigger diameter than the caps in the drive shaft. make sure the u-joint fits snugly in the saddles of the yoke before installing them.

the ID of the big and small cap u-joints are the same.
I buy one of each of the u-joints and swap two of the caps...then I have two rear u-joints...:bouncy:

I get the right u-joints. I've seen plenty of people on this board and that come into my shop run into this problem. They will put the small cap u-joint in and then have a vibration. I mentioned this to the original poster so they don't make this mistake and for anybody who was not aware of this difference to now know about it if they read this. Perhaps you should look at the big picture.
