I'm doing a trans swap and wanted to share some pictures. the AOD came out of a 90 Mustang GT the C4 was in a 70 Maverick And here are the torque converters side by side: I'll post more details about the swap as we get through it.
that'll be a good swap... what motor are you putting it behind? only drawback putting one in a 70 is the smaller tunnel... I've had stock, modded and full race AODs in my car at one time or another.....
If you want to make a noticeable improvement in off line performance, get a 2400-2800 lockup stall converter... Will really wake up the low end and being lockup the RPMs will be same in O/D as a stock converter...
The AOD in stock form is a power robber, it does give you over drive but it is not the most efficient! Once they are performance updated they do work well! A friend replaced his C4 in a 1964 Fairlane with a 347 The car slowed 2 tenths in a drag pass! After being up graded the car was only 2 hundredths slower than the C4!
First it will be behind a 75 250 from my donor vehicle (just because I have it and it has compression above 175 on all 6 cylinders, and it's paid for. Later a mildly built 302/4bbl roller. (250-300 hp) Yeah, I am expecting there to be some massaging involved, that AOD is noticeably larger than the C4, I have some big hammers... Our 65 Falcon 175 would be great fun with an AOD or even better with a 4R70W because of the lower gears, but there no easy or cheap overdrive options for a small six bell pattern. So our Falcon needs a rear end swap from 2.75:1 to some lower gears to get some performance at the expense of fuel economy..but we are on to the Maverick project now.
I can only imagine how much power the E4OD robbed from the 302, I still can't believe they put that monster behind them. Here's a photo comparison of the two together just for fun. The C4 is from my 71 and the E4OD is from the Bronco I pulled the engine for my car from. Let's see someone get that into a Maverick tunnel!!!!
I will ask my transmission builder about that when I take my AOD to him to check out. Are there any drawbacks?
I am building a touring car for long highway trips. It will probably never get on a track of any kind.
I was told the AOD trans and torque converter it came with was from a stock 90 Mustang GT. Any idea what the stock stall speed was for that application?
Maybe 1800, they suck... Yes AOD do have internal friction/mass issues, but if you're building a cruiser you'll never know the difference, especially with a converter upgrade... Stock for stock, a AOD with converter upgrade will out perform a C4...With no other changes, the Bird dropped almost .5 in 1/4 mi switching to a 2600 vs stock converter...
Is there any way to identify the stall speed of a torque converter on the shop bench? stampings, marks, etc.. I don't know for sure that the TC is stock. I want to know what upgrades are available for an AOD, what the upgrade does, and how much each upgrade costs. On our 65 Falcon, he upgraded the oiling system and changed one of the servos, I don't remember which one.
