Hey guys .... it been a while since I last visited.

My freshman son had been asking about the maverick (just sitting under a tarp).

Looks like he is finally coming around !!

Anyway, it has a floor shift converted 3 speed transmission in it now.

I would like to convert it to a 5-speed before he starts driving it.

I was curious as to what transmission I should search for and can I use the existing bellhousing or what exactly do I need to round up to get this conversion done.

    Thanks

T5 5 speed can optimize that torquey six's powerband . The OD allows for modern interstate cruise at a loping RPM and make that Maverick six kick thru the gears if the original high-geared rear axle ratio is closer to the T5 Mustang lower ratio's ... .

    same as 157T V8 Block/Clutch/FW/pilot/Bell Pattern/.

You already have a 'small block ford" type bellhouse for the Toploader (3.03) 3 speed in the Maverick. Many vendors sell a simple bolt--on adaptor plate to slide the 84-93 Mustang T5 5 spd onto the "Toploader" bellhouse (@ $130). Upgrading to a diaphragm clutch also helps drivability.

.. A T5 from any 'fox body' mustang will work, the 4cyl T5's have gearing help for the six Maverick typical 2.79 rear axle ratio but the V8 T5 and suitable rear ratio brings a whole different performance level. . Only @ first year-'84 'stang used the" NWC" T5 used (non-world class) and still works fine with any six'.

    I run a NWC T5 on a 'driver' Maverick 170/3.50 rear and a Cobra-Z T5/3.80 posi on the performance 250.

    have fun

I have a T5 tranny behind my 250 ci Six cylinder. The car runs so much better than with the original 3 speed. I have a 302 that I will be installing to replace the Six cylinder as soon as I round up all the parts for the conversion. I believe that i will change to a clutch cable instead of the linkage and use the newer style bell housing. The T5 is the best upgrade that you can do to a Maverick!
