I recently purchased a deluxe Marti report for my 1973 Maverick. The car has what appears to be a factory installed vinyl roof but it is not listed in the factory options. The only options listed are C78x14 White Sidewall Tires, Power Steering, Air Conditioner-SelectAire, AM Radio and Tinted Glass Complete. Could the roof have been a dealer installed option? I sent this same question to Marti but received no reply.

Does it have the LDO option? I'm thinking the LDO's came with Vinyl tops. Having said that, vinyl roofs are common on 73 Mavs, LDO or not.

Does not have the LDO side trim but it could have been removed. If it had the LDO option, wouldn't that have shown up on the report? The top is in great shape but I plan on eventually removing it when I have the car repainted. I was just curious as to why it did not show up as a factory installed option.

Yes, the LDO option is trim code PU. Search Vinyl Roof removal. Several guys have gone through it and the worst enemy is rust underneath the vinyl. Sorry I can't answer they rest of the coding question.

Maybe posting some pictures of your interior, exterior and Marti Report would help us. Does it have the full, halo or 3/4 vinyl top? When you take the top off, the rotation number and 62A will likely be written on the underside of it if it were factory installed top. Mine was...

No doubt there were vinyl roofs installed by dealer(likely sent out to independent shop), those would have a fully painted roof underneath...

My trim code is BT Beige Cloth/Vinyl Bench Seat. The top runs the full length of the car but has the painted area between the chrome trim and the drip rails. No bubbles so hopefully no rust underneath. I have read that Ford painted the tops before installing the vinyl at the factory. Any truth to that?

That would be a Halo top....like this one.

I have never seen a dealer installed vinyl top, but it could be a first.

    As stated...post up some pictures.

It is a Halo top. Pretty sure it is factory but wondered why it was not on the Marti report. Will try to post some pics when I can.

    Possibilities:

    1. Mistake on the report
    2. VIN has been moved from another car to yours
    3. Dealer installed vinyl top
    4. Previous owner installed vinyl top

I talked to a previous owner of the car soon after I bought it and he told me the car had originally come from Oklahoma. The Marti report verified that it was sold by Dub Richardson Ford in Oklahoma City OK. All of the info from the door tag including the VIN seems correct also.

My car had fully painted roof under my vinyl top. I believe it was GM that skimped on the paint when a vinyl top was involved.

A halo top wouldn't be a fun one to install from scratch. Laying out and welding the studs for the trim pieces, and then buying the trim pieces would make it cost prohibitive unless it was done at the factory.

Marti is a human being. He's made mistakes before.

What VIN number is on the fender apron lip I wonder?? Like Craig said, there are lots of possibilities after 40+ years...

    Nice car BTW.

Where exactly do I find the VIN on the fender? The VIN on the dash and the one on the door tag do match. The paint on the car looks much better in the pic than it actually is. It does shine but lots of sanding marks and poor bodywork. It was originally medium yellow gold and I wish I would have found it before someone painted it black.
