Ive been looking at replacing my 8" rear for a 9" rear. I've put some posts on some of my local fb pages for a 9" rear but idk if I want to buy a used or new rear. I've talked to a few shops and I've looked at quick performance and moser. So what's y'alls experience with this and what did you end up going with.
The engine I had built makes too much power for the 8 inch. I needed the 31 spline axle shafts and I wanted trac lok and bigger brakes.
I have been looking at Quick Performance also .... HarleyGA did you get it made to stock width or did you get the 65 mustang width which is 3/4 of a inch wider ... it works out to 3/8 of a inch on each side and thought I wouldn`t have to run spacers behind the wheel.
In my last maverick I broke two 8 inches both times snapped a axel and ring and pinion... very expensive wish I would have just spent the money on a 9 inch it would have saved me money in the long run
Here is what I ordered. $680 - 9" Housing/Axle Package (1973 Ford Maverick) - Big Ford (Old-Style) Housing Ends - 51-1/4" Housing - 43" Center to Center on Perches - New Axles, Axle Bearings, Wheel Studs, & Retainers - 31 Spline, 5 on 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern, 1/2" Studs $820 - Center Section (Assembled) - New 31 Spline Trac-Lock Posi - New Motive Performance Gears (3.70 Ratio) - New Timken USA Bearings $300 - 11" Drum Brake Kit (New Drums, New Shoes, & New Internals)
I want to do the swap because I'm gonna mini tub the car, so I'm moving the leaf springs and I figured I'll just put a strong rear end. The car is gonna be a street/strip car 10" wide tire with either 3.60,3.70,3.89, I don't think it's gonna happen but 4.10
I did the whole Quick Perf. 9" deal, went with 35 spline Moser axles w\ Strange ctr. section. And the Youkon Grizzley locker. Very happy with it. What you get is a cut down truck rear I believe, and they put new tubes and ends on it. I went with the same ends as my 8" so I could use the stock rear drums, just hung them up for the install, didn't even have to bleed them. On a side note, because of the bigger tubes, it lowered my Comet a little..
Due to limited resourced for Mavericks over here, I recently gave my 8inch housing and a 9inch housing to a guy, he built a housing using the 8inch tubes, cut to length 31 spline axles, 1/2 inch studs @$650. I then purchased a Yukon locker, Richmond light weight and polished 3.89 gearset, and strange centre section. Total cost back in my car was just under $2000. I'm happy with that as was quoted $3500-4000 to have one built
