    Hello!
I have a '71 Mav that I've had the gas tank cleaned. I've replaced the filler
tube grommet, but now I can't seem to get the tube into the tank beyond
the first half inch. It is the proper fitting grommet, just very snug--as it
should be. Is there some lubricant I can use on the tube that won't affect
the gas, or is this just one of those pushpushpushpush things?

Thanks for your help Mav/Comet kin!

I used Vaseline on it myself.

I had to lower the tank down quite a bit to get my filler to go in.

Thank you all for your responses! So the WD40, Vaseline, or silicon lube won't contaminate the gas? Having a rebuilt carb, I'm very concerned about that.

    Thank you again!

Ford used to recommend 10w30 when lubricating gas tank grommets. It works and it won't contaminate the fuel...

I used a combination of ATF and acetone in a spray bottle. Wiped of the access. Worked real good for me.

I've heard tales of people actually adding a cap full of transmission to their gasoline back in the days to help lubricate their internals and such. lol. Idk if there's any benefits or functionality to that but just heard it from a few old school guys back in the day.

OP it's just 1 of those things you have to just do it and get it done situations. A little wd-40 or liquid wrench won't hurt here .... I wouldn't glob vaseline on it but just enough to get it slick to slide in. These ol'gals need it from time to time :rofl2:
