In 1984 I did the same thing. 9" narrowed to Maverick width, stock 28 spline axle's, mini spool 4.56 gears. 9x30 M&H tires. Raced it like that for years. Every so often I would remove and inspect the axle's. Some times they would show a slight twist on the splines. This was when axle's were plentiful in the junk yards. $25 dollars and ready to go. Another way to go is find a late Ranchero, 9" coil spring car. and use the axle's. The short axle is the same length as the Maverick long axle and have the Ranchero long axle shortened and resplined to the Maverick short axle length. Both cars use the same bearing. And the Ranchero axle's are quite a bit larger.

Just go out and buy a good Set of aftermarket axles that are alot stronger than the stock ones.then you don't have to worry about breaking one and end up in a accident. Do it once, and done, then its right and in the long run you might even save money when you're not up against the wall.

mav man you are 100% When I did that we were running 12.40's. with a mild 302. No way would I try that with a Dart block 347 and a shot. But for a mild little street motor on dot's, I would say go have fun.

Yeah on the street you would never have a problem, probably be OK on the track too unless you have a stick or high stall where you are really leaving hard off the line.

Ran the 430 on the mini spool 28 spline this weekend..ran the 28,5 × 9 ,,I Was surprised my 60 foots did not improve,, 1.660,, i guess I do only have some old traction bars on it with old shocks...my top end improved by revving more with some nice cold air Sunday night...11 ,760 at 114 mph
