satchelmcqueen, you are going all over the place with this thread. You are moving from heads and carb to strokers then back to heads and carb? Do you have the knowledge to build a stroker and have it live? If not, you may end up being the proud owner of a very expensive 450lb chunk of metal. From what you said you want to accomplish with this built, a nice little 302 would do the trick.

You need to run a small valve aluminum head if you have stock pistons or you can step up to a set of big valve Trick Flow heads to prevent the valves in either case from hitting the top of the pistons. This is just one of the issues you will encounter with putting heads on your 302. If you will be running guides with the heads, hardened push rods of the correct length will be required.

Regardless of which way you go, if you are budgeting 5K for the engine alone, I would go with a crate engine and be done with it.

I've attached two links. One for a fully dressed 306 and 347 stroker. Both will need to have their oil pans and pickups changed to a front sump. Not a big deal.

The 347 package needs a few more parts than the 306.

    Just my thoughts.

thanks guys. yes im sorry for being all over the place here. ive never dug into the engine to build...only to tear apart when i worked at a junkyard in my teens. the only thing ive ever had experience with engine wise, was dressing up the 302 long block i have now back in 97. so yes lots to learn and consider. ive got good advice here so ill study on this and decide soon which way to go. thanks all.

i didnt realize all the things to do when changing heads. thats beyond my skills.

One question I have; what kind of street manners will this setup have for a car mainly for street cruising? How will it idle? Will u need to step up from stock trans converter, etc.? These are questions I wud address B4 signing on for this setup.

Actually this is stated for both engines...

Notes:Engine has front sump oil pan and standard rotation water pump. 164-tooth flexplate. 91+ octance fuel recommended.
Not sure where you can get 91 octance(or any other grade), but that's what it says...

The 164T flexplate will not work with the small bell C4 used in Mav/Comet...

The 219* cam may be a little choppy at idle, I'd reccomend a 2200-2400 stall converter...

Unless you have a nice chunk of cash laying around stick with a 306. My last 306 ran very well, I often beat Chevy 350's no problem and gave fuel injected supercharged 5.0'so a run for their money..with that said, I am currently putting a 347 in my comet now. $8500 and counting.......

400 ponies....(wiping the drool off my arm)....ahem, MY car would need disc brakes, sub frame connectors, better shocks? better sway bar, posi for sure, and putting 5k under the hood without some good gauges is unthinkable for me because I would only be able to do that about once. hmmmm, maybe a better radiator and electric fan too....and my C-4 would not be my friend for too long w/o upgrades I imagine. heheheheheh.....oh I didnt even consider tires.....and then I might be too scared of it!
