Hey all, Still looking for the right deal on a Maverick. CL ad has what appears to be a straight Maverick with the old 250/C4 combo removed and a 302 EFI engine (needs rebuilt) out of a 1990 Crown vic and AOD tranny as well. If the 302 is set up for EFI, I can see knocking that throttle body off and throwing a carb on, but what is done with the misc. sensors, etc.? Crank position sensor, knock sensor, ?? sensors? It would seem you need the ECM as well and some mad wiring skills OR can you delete most of the sensors pretty easily and go with a more traditional set up? Asking near $2,000 for everything, seems pretty high, but is a 5 bolt, disc brake (front) car that looks straight with little rust (none evident, but you know there is some there). TIA Chris PS - I can research the engine stuff, I'm sure it is here, just don't have time over lunch. Any comments on price?
Once you swap intakes the sensors are gone as most of them are in the intake... BTW there is no crank sensor or knock sensor on any Crown Vic 5.0... Those engines use the asthmatic E6 heads and wimpy cam, HP was only 150 vs 225 for the Mustang 5.0...
The sensors and ecm control fuel and spark. If you replace with a carb and standard distributor none of the other stuff is needed.
We just did this today with my 71 Comet GT. Put a new model roller 5.0 in it. We put the intake and carb on it and used the old model distributor, coil, front cover with fuel pump provision, 71 pullies and brackets, and 71 oil pan and pick-up. I think that was it. -Matt
Thanks all, Good to know we would want a different cam and heads if we reworked the 302 $$. Glad to hear the removal of sensors etc. is pretty straight forward. Chris
I see you used...front cover with fuel pump provision, did the stock cam have the fuel pump eccentric?
Cams don't have fuel pump eccentrics, they bolt on with the timing gear... If you used the original cast gear dist, the steel 5.0 cam WILL eat the gear in few K miles...
Yes, forgot about that, switched to the eccentric for the fuel pump had the 2 piece style that has the flat plate with outer ring that rotates, and used an original style distributor that had a steel cam gear installed. It's all in the details and I'm glad you guys caught that. That will save him time and frustration later. One like this.. https://www.google.com/search?q=302...&ved=0ahUKEwjElKOYlYTRAhWq3YMKHb5qD1wQgTYI-AM Matt
Krazy Komet makes a good point. Those E6 heads and cam will afford you an engine with lots of off idle torque that dies at 3,500 RPM and I mean DIES! I know, I have one in my T Bird. Look for a Mustang or Explorer engine if you want a better foundation for your car.
