The three stainless bars in grille were GT only...

I have seen Comet grilles with the stainless bars that were not GT. FrankTF's low mileage museum car was one .... argent grey grille with stainless. So, stainless bars are a great clue, but not 100% definitive. GTs should have a black grille with stainless as far as I know.

The parts car I had was similar. It had the remains of the argent grill with stainless trim along with the GT style door panels and bench seat. - Matt

What is the engine code on the dash, if I'm not mistaken to get a 302 in 71 is to get the gt package

You could get a 302 in a regular Comet in '71. The Comet GT came standard with the 200 six cylinder. The 302 was optional.

You are mistaken, starting with '71 model year any Comet or Maverick was available with 170, 200, 250 or 302... My '71 GT parts car had a 200...

Ok, now that has to be probably a one of one car with the Black paint with Red Vinyl Roof. Have any pics of the full car to share yet? Might want to splurge for the Deluxe Marti Report. Pretty nicely optioned car. - Matt

Yeah I was surprised to see the red vinyl top :p I don't think I'll be putting that back on. I'm going to try to pick it up this weekend, then I should have more pics. Until then, here's one from when my father bought the car in 1992 20161229_123639.jpg

That's a fine looking GT. Red Top and Red stripes. Would certainly be different.

    Nice!

I would definitely get a deluxe Marti Report for that car. I wonder what color the GT stripes were on the car when it was new?

Yeah I think I'm going to go with the deluxe. When he bought the car, the guy gave him an original silver stripe kit to install, but the car needed paint, so it never got installed. I'm hoping to find that somewhere in the house. Will the deluxe report indicate the original stripe color?

The silver stripe looks good on the black Comet GT's. The deluxe Marti Report won't tell you what color the stripe was.

I bet it had silver stripes.
