Does anyone have photos of Comet tail lights with the small chrome grills removed from the lenses?

    Thanks, Jason

Or you can get the "Rare Canadian Taillight Option" (it's a joke guys, started by Chip) ....

You take 4 lenses and get rid of the backup lights. :thumbs2:
You cut the outboard lenses off the second pair and graft them onto the inboard space of the opposite set. You have to cut these a bit diagonally to save some inner supports.

Personally, I like the grills because they add detail and dimension. And for that specific reason.. I'm going in the exact opposite direction than some others by incorporating 4 backup light lenses in mine. The smaller early version clear backup lenses will be dyed red to match the surrounding lenses. Then add custom sequential LED's right into the housings to make it all come alive at night. More detail.. more depth.. more light.. custom all the way.

Interesting concept ! FOUR back up lights .. ( Why not ) .. I installed two 1965 Mustang Back Up lights in the rear valance and went LED All Red for the taillights like the Captain has . I've since added sequential taillights on the Comet and they really made a difference. Now the dudes in the rear can ' SEE ' me when I stop !
Would you post some photos when you get this done ? I'd like to see how that looks ! Thanks.

Yep, already did that. I was wanting to see how it looked minus the grills. I think I prefer to leave them in place.

I like the grills better too, but mine came without them and there are many other things that call my attention currently. Lol....my Comet isnt even sure its not a Maverick at this point.

    Hey Jason :
I may have some Comet Taillight Lenses that have the back-up light stored in the attic if you're considering a change. Lemmeno .

You bet I will, Chip! After all that work and extra expense(available LED conversion kit would be far cheaper).. I'll surely be proud enough to share the final result with all the hardcore Maverick and Comet crowd. We simply mocked them up and as mentioned above, the centrally located "bullseye" of the smaller early version adds some dimension and longer distance detail to the taillights. From out on the street about 75 feet away.. the whole family(plus one neighbor out getting his mail.. haha) thought the quad backup light versions had far greater detail and overall "bling". Basically makes the taillights POP at further viewing distances. Plus, I figure if it runs better than I already imagine it will(which happens pretty often because I seriously despise coming up shorter on power than planned).. not many people will get full closeups of my tailights unless I'm stuck at a light. They probably still won't know what they hell kind of car it is or was.. but they'll think the taillights looked cool racing away from them. LOL

I'd wager the setup you're anticipating will look great .. If you want to increase the lighting .. there are bulbs available that will fit into the Maverick or Comet stock 'sockets' that are laced with LEDs and yield a much brighter glow than the stock 1147 bulbs . Lemmeno if you're interested and I'll look them up for you. I have them somewhere on my computer files .. they worked great . I changed to the LED Sequential Taillights a couple years ago and replaced the
bulbs with the 'circuit-board' they furnished for the sequential's . Know what you mean by not knowing what kind of car it is .. I've had them tell me they had ' Vega ' just like mine , and a 'Camaro' just like mine ..etc.etc. Anyway .. let me know if I can help with the bulb IDs .

I got a set of LED's for my tail section last year from West Coast Classic Cougar part# SKU10043, very satisfied w/ them. Seemed a little bit pricey, for small bulbs $33.00 shipped, but I guess if you want the nice stuff - U got to pay.

TBH, that was my original plan but if I went that route I'd probably be looking towards swapping sockets to the newer 3157 spade connector style bulbs. Instead of plug and play bulbs I will eventually go with a main controller like this because I have longer term plans to convert the entire car over to sequential LED. Tons of available mild to wild controllers these days.

Figured Jason wouldn't mind if I asked this question here since it's relevant to his original question. Anyone ever heard of.. "very rare no backup lenses".. Comet tail lights before?

New one on me and I can only assume they have been modded/spliced.

I've never heard of a Rare Dual Lens Comet Taillight .. I don't believe FORD made these .. The photos look like a
'Splice' setup like mine and others I've seen . It doesn't follow that FORD would offer a Comet WITHOUT back up
lights when they offered their Comets WITH backup lights incorporated in their ' stock ' vehicles.
The set on ebay seems pricey .. You could make your own for much less $$$.. Incidentally,
I have a couple of Comet lenses with the back up light ..Found them when we were storing some other parts in the attic . Lemmeno if you need them .
