351 Windsor motor not fitting

    I have a 351 Windsor and I'm trying to put it in my 70 maverick. It was originally a straight six. The shock towers are 2 inches from touching the heads. My headers in the back are touching the firewall and the steering gearbox. How should I go about modifying this?

    You need to cut back the spring towers and box them in. You will also need custom headers or run stock exhaust manifolds.

    What headers are you using? Hooker makes a swap header.

    Looks like you have a Borgeson steering box on the setup? Are you using the Saginaw pump or Ford pump?

    Hey 70MAV :
    Heavy on the ' Cut Back ' ..Be sure you cut the notch DOWN as far as you can to allow for ' bends ' in the headers you will eventually hook up . You'll appreciate any extra clearances later for sure. I've put a Windsor in a 74 Comet and had to perform surgery on the towers .. I REMOVED them entirely and, the stock steering plumbing.. I put a rack and pinion setup in it's place with Borgeson Steering setup. LOTSA work but the effort is Worth It if you're planning on keeping the car. Make it your OWN !

    Ok thanks I called a few modification exhaust shops to make me some custom headers but they said it would be months waiting for me just to get it done, so I'm gonna have to cut it.. do you know which headers I should run.. Shortys or longs?

    I seen them I got the after market Power steering kit so the gearbox is bigher so it's hitting it Ass well.

    Headers make more power than exhaust manifolds, especially in the upper RPM range. But the horsepower isn't doing you any good if you can't even get the engine into the car.

    I took the easy route with my 351...it was a 347 that was mistaken for a 351...LOL.

    Hi again 70Mav:
    If you're proficient with a welder you can obtain a set of Mustang Headers and remove and rework some pipes to
    accommodate a good fit and save some $$$ . We purchased a set of Mustang headers and had to change five of he
    eight pipes but they work very well. We bought some mandrel bends from SUMMIT and reworked them as we needed ..Had them ceramic coated afterwards before installing them permanently .
