Good thing you checked it out !! I've dodged a few bullets myself during a build . This would be a ' biggie ' .. Nice going Frank: Cometized Chip
I got the trunion upgrade done, it is definitely quieter even idling..... Now I have a new problem though..... I was checking everything over in the car and decided the change the rear end lube..... When I drained it the was a ton of metallic and not just fine stuff, I think I might be eating the true-trac unit..... I'll have to pull the center section and check it out.....
Good catch on both problems. Those new trunions look like nice parts. Hoping the rear axle has a simple solution. If you are going to Showtime or Bradenton for a Fri/Sat night, let me know. I haven't been to either in a while. Might have to put some white shoe polish numbers on the Lincoln and see how slow and consistent it is ....
We will see what's going on with the rear this weekend..... Bradenton is doing nothing until Sept, but I will let you know when I am going.....
I got the rear end out and apart yesterday..... Completely disassembled everything, looks like the pinion support bearing was destroying itself which also was causing the pinion to start wearing..... I was lucky to get it apart at this point before any major damage was done..... I completely disassembled the tru-trac unit and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, there are no thrust washers in it at all..... Everything in the unit is hardened and rides directly on other steel parts..... Here's what everything was looking like when I leaft the shop yesterday.....
Today I got everything cleaned up and reassembled where necessary, so I can start putting things up for sale.....
I am going to build what I should have in the first place, an 8.8..... Not the car, just the 9" stuff..... But I got a nice shinny lug nut I'll sell you for $29?????
glad to hear there wasnt anything seriously damaged I was actually surprised to see an update on your build thread I thought your car was done. I would be lost with all of those parts lol
I had thought about that at times but I have the 9 inch and won't be putting down near as much power so I'll stick with it untill I need a change.
I have never seen one that's done, maybe all together..... There are always changes and updates when they make power and you race them..... 9" rear are plenty strong enough..... I have used them in the past with good luck, but this one just doesn't seem to like me..... Plus the part of the 9" design that makes them strong also causes more drag then the 8.8 does..... I have used 8.8's in all my builds for almost 20 years now with no issues what so ever..... This is the first 9" in a long time and like stated above it just doesn't seem to like me..... Not to mention less drag equals free ET at the track.....
I didn't get much done on the Comet this weekend..... I did pull the tailshaft housing off the trans so I will be able to correct the speedo gear(gear ordered), then on the output shaft just fit real loose on the out put shaft..... Other then that I just got everything cleaned up and ready to go for the rearend as the parts will be rolling in this week..... The only thing that I still have to order is the axles once I have a definite housing width..... I did pick up a new toy today!!!!!
