Wow ... I guess you found the weakest link. Strong car to do that. You ought to submit this to Car Craft. They have a carnage section that they print in the reader's section.
Guess you found out where the weak link was, brings up the old expression if its not one thing its another. Hate to see it but now you know that you will have to build the tranny bulletproof as well. Glad it didnt oil down the track and send you out of control
Sh!t happens!!!!! I pretty sure it was gear failure..... The planetary set was rebuilt with all new pins, bearings and thrust washers, the gears were in excellent shape..... The only thing in the trans that was stock is the planetary set..... It's a Reid Racing case and pump, TCI input shaft, FTI servo - valve body and 6 clutch drum..... I used stock 1.76 gearsets with a trans brake before, I thought off the footbrake it would be fine..... Guess I was wrong, at least with this kind of power..... Now you can add an $1100 straight cut 1.80 planetary assembly, I'll have at least $3400 in this damn trans now..... Oh well, what ya gonna do......
I figured that the transmission was built knowing that everything else was. You are going to have to get a pilots license when you get the bugs all worked out (hopefully this is the last) because the car is going to fly
I got everything all cleaned up and ready to reassemble, I put as much together as I could..... Parts are ordered.....
Got the trans parts this week..... The trans is all back together and ready to go back in tomorrow morning..... Here's the new FTI 1.80 straight cut planetary set I got for it, and then the trans back together.....
I have a points race at Bradenton the week before, not to mention some testing to be done..... Just sayin!!!!!
After I got this thing going again I had to get some stuff done on my fathers car, so I ended up daily driving the Comet for a little over 3 weeks..... My laptop also took a shit last weekend, so I went and got a new one Monday..... Loaded everything in the new one and got the car ready to go to the track on Wednesday night..... Ended up having to update the ecu(took forever), got to the rack kind of late..... On the way to the track I made a short full throttle blip to make sure everything was working properly(water meth, fuel pump kick up and such)..... When I tried to read the log at the track I realized I needed to reconfigure my log files due to the new computer and software download..... I figured out that everything was working and I was at the track already so I figured I might as well make one..... It made a really clean smooth pass..... After that I went home so I could get the log info in order so I could check everything..... I found the pass looked really good, now it's time to start taking a little fuel out and adding some timing as long as the oil looks clear today..... I just want to make sure it quit making metal since to rocker arm trunion failure.....
The oil did still have some metallic in it, but nothing like it had before..... It's probably still flushing out from before, oil pressure is great and has not shown any loss since I first got it running..... I changed the oil and filter and am going to keep running it for now..... I also checked the plugs, looks like the 6's are not cool enough by quite a bit..... I will try some 7's and get some 8's just in case..... While the plugs were out I did a compression test and found all cylinders to be very strong..... I'll get back out this week and test the plugs and maybe start pulling some fuel out.....
