    Hi all,

I did a search and didn't turn up anything conclusive ....

By the time this scoop went through being used on the 69 Cougar, then 69 Cyclone, and finally our cars, there are multiple options for placing the studs in the scoop. There are three bosses for the front mounting point, and one position on the driver side has two, and the center rear two positions also have two choices.

Has anyone truly established which choices are correct for our cars?

My scoop has three part numbers embossed in it, so that should put it as 71-72 Comet. It came from eBay. It also coincidentally is the same green that my car originally was, so that leads me to believe the stud positions for it are correct, but I am looking for confirmation.

Also, in searching online, I learned that there also is a 4th "D34B ..." version out there as well, so that would be 1973-on Comet GT. I suppose this means one more bolt pattern .... o_O Maybe we can sort this out here for others future use.

I remember hearing the Cougar and Comet scoop do not have some bolts in the same location. Could be the front bolts are different.

i have a picture somewhere in my build thread. maybe you can make out the locations. they will go through the braces under the hood, i assume that's where the different stud locations come from.

I'm pretty sure the scoops were also used on the '71 429 CJ Cougar and on the pretty rare '72 Cougar GT.

The following is a shot of the engine compartment side of my functional Comet GT hood. Don't know if it will be of any value Captain?

    Z28th1s,
I saw reproductions online for the Cougar/Cyclone/Comet scoop and that showed a 2.5 " height. The same website showed a repop of the 71-72 Cougar scoop. It looked quite similar but listed a 1.75" height.

    HotRock,
Thanks for posting. It does look a lot like the two center rear studs are forward of the outboard ones, and this matches how my scoop was configured.

    Tody,
I looked through your build thread. Page 11 if I am remembering right. Unfortunately, most of your pics are not rendering, probably because I am using Google Chrome.

I knew they looked similar but wasn't sure if they were the same. I have only seen 2 of them in person. A white '71 429 CJ at Carlisle several years ago and a girl that went to high school with me had a blue '72 Cougar GT, but that was 35 years ago!

I think I solved this. I was looking on eBay for a hood scoop stud kit I saw a while ago. Didn't find the kit, but stumbled on an ad for a "69 Cougar hood scoop". For the first time I noticed arrows next to the part numbers.
Ironically, all the witness marks on the eBay auction scoop match mine, also making his scoop one from a Comet GT, instead of Cougar like he advertised. (Same thing, I know ...LOL)

The "D14B" means 1971 Comet and the arrow is pointing at the third post back. My scoop is nasty enough that I had to rush back out to the garage and look really hard to see arrows on it too.

So, this confirms in my mind that I actually do have a scoop off of a Comet GT.

Going by how the studs came on mine, to install on a Comet hood, you will want the third position back for the front studs, the inboard position for the second stud on the driver side, and for the rear center studs, also use the inboard positions. In other words, anywhere you have a choice, use ALL of the positions that put the studs closer to the center of the scoop.

Now I remember what was different on the reproduction Cougar scoop why it didn't fit a Comet.
