So quick question.... I have a 72 Comet and a 72 Maverick. I was planning on swapping the noses, making the Comet a Maverick and the Maverick a Comet since the mavericks shell is better. Im now slightly confused because the Mavericks fender are notched but the Comets are not... Was this another difference between the Mavericks and Comets back then?

Unless I am mistaken, there were small bumper fenders and large bumper fenders. The small bumper fenders had the notch for the guard that sits below the grill. The big bumper cars did not have those. The fenders for the Maverick and Comet should be identical if they are from the same year vehicles. I believe the only difference in the front of the two cars is the hood, grill, bumper, and stone guard. I am sure someone will correct me if otherwise.

This is exactly what i thought, but my comet does not have the notched fenders. No signs of any accidents or anything either.

Does the Comet have the small front bumper?

Yes it has small bumper, original mounts nothing modified so its not like it was a 73 or 74+ and changed to a small bumper car. Its just something odd that i took notice to that kind of has me wondering what its been through in the past.

What part of fender is notched?

My '74 Maverick has a '76 Comet hood and grille. Hood fit the Mav latch with no mods. I removed the bumpers' heavy backing beam and only use the bumper outer shell without any of the 'impact' components.

I had 'tucked' the big bumper but not happy with flat looking front end. I am currently 'untucking' and moving bumper back out and re-using the Comet rubber splash shield between grill and bumper.

the rubber splash shield and its metal support do not line up with any of the Maverick fasteners...

Mav' with Comet hood/grill and 'flat' looking bumper mod currently being altered:

Ill get some pictures of the Comet here on lunch break, it appears the rain has let up for the day. The fenders would be notched at the bottom in front of the marker lamp where the filler meets the fenders.

Nice early Comet parts are very hard to find. I would bet you could sell them off, get some really nice Mav parts and be $$$$$s ahead.
