Ok so long story short. Been having a hard time figuring out why my engine started smoking and running horrible. After compression tests...visual of valve seals ....new pcv and filter....and carb rebuild...ive finally gor it running without smoke and going smooth. Havent drove it yet. Seems blowing air through all the holes helped something. No smoke...90% smooth idle now. Question is...when I look down the carb...I dont see any fuel being dumped in. Even if I raise the rpm a little I still dont see anything. Am I supposed to see something? I'm wondering if I dont have one more hole that's stopped up. What is the copper coloered pipe sticking out the carb neck? And should fuel be coming out of that? Not the big one up top but the little one in the bottom part. As for seeing fuel do I need to hit some major rpms to see that? Just want to be sure I'm still not clogged somewhere so I dont get stranded on the road.
I dunno enough about those carbs to be of much help but if you see fuel flowing when idling, the carb has a problem... At idle vacuum pulls fuel as almost a vapor from the idle mixture port(s), that are usually in lower section... Not visible in most carbs... A rough/rich idle is indication vacuum is pulling fuel from a area that's normally free of fuel(at least at idle)... As throttle is opened, air rushing through venturi pulls fuel from the main discharge nozzle in center of carb opening... Well it ran almost perfect for 10 - 15 mins. Went to see my daughters dance recitle and left the mav in the garage. Came back 3 hrs later to fine tune....crank the engine and immediately it ran horrible as before...smoke and all. I just dont understand.
I'm now wondering if the float is soaking in gas just enough to weigh it down some and not close the needle. I know the needle seats by blowing into the fuel filter and then unseats when I turn the carb sideways. New floats are $50 each. This is getting stupid.
Wrong float but thanks. The one I need is around $40-50. Not sure if I want to get a float or just get a rebuilt carb with some kind of guarantee.
Sorry about that, after I posted that I saw your other post. But if you look on eBay there is a new float for yours at $29.95. I just did a search for Carter RBS float.
Update. It was the float. Tried my sons float out of his and it runs almost perdectly smooth. Runs awesome on the road now. The old float after drying out for 4 days now has a clear line left on it where it was weighed down by soaking up gas causing the needle to not seat. Also read on a carter rbs forum that they recommend changing the float each time its rebuilt as the material will absorb gas over time. Feels good to drive the maverick again. This time smoother than ever.
