Hey guys. Just curious if anyone has any info on the speedometer cable that will work on a 4 speed toploader I’m using my donor trans out of my Mexican Mav parts car Where I can buy one or will my automatic one in the 70 work? I read in the interchange that the Auto will work but I just wana confirm
Your automatic one will fit if it is long enough and it should be, you might have to change the gear on it to have the speedo correct but that is easy and available from just about every vendor they go by colors and teeth count and you can just pull it out after car is running and change it without loosing any gear oil
Interesting... I remember the speedometer working in the right direction. Pretty sure the accuracy was off because we installed a 4.11:1 geared 9" differential at the same time. Bruce
The cut of the gear doesn't determine which direction the speedometer cable spins. The direction of the engine rotation does.
Well that's not quite correct, the rotation of trans output shaft determines which way the speedo reads. Granted if you can get your engine started in reverse rotation, the speedo will read backwards. Good way to remove milage as well. If no one else has it David Kee of Toploader fame has the correct angle gear. http://4speedtoploaders.com/store/speedometergears.html
Well your wrong here. Rotation from moving the cable from the driver's side to the passenger side reverses the direction the cable turns. Ford made left and right cable gears to change this along with different shaft gears that had opposite canted teeth.(for the manual transmissions ) And it gets damned confusing on what gears work together. Been there, done that. The speeedo in my Comet still doesn't work because I picked the wrong combination of gears in my Toploader. Then my cable got burnt on my headers so I just gave up and use the tach to estimate my speed.
