I'm planning on doing a small bumper conversion on my 73 comet GT. Does this mean I would need a front valence and rock guard from a 70-72 or would a 73 valence and rock guard work? My 73 valence is messed up so I have to buy one either way. Also are there any mounting differences between these valences that could pose a challenge? And I would greatly appreciate if someone could put in a link to a place where I could buy the required valence and rock guard for the conversion. Thanks.

The 73 valance and rock (stone guard) are a 1 year only type, the valance would physically fit but has a larger opening in the middle area to fit around the bumper mounts and would look out of place the stone guard would not fit.

The center grill support will also need changed to the 1970-1972 style.

Front valances and stone guards are available NEW from several vendors.

I've located the valence and stone guard, but I can't seem to find a center grill support. I don't care if it's in good condition used or new but anything would be appreciated.

I used a '73 grille in my '74 when I went to small bumpers. If your car is a 73, I think you can continue to use your current grille, grille support, and leave your turn signals in their present location. I dont know what year my valence is....it was laying in the interior when I bought the car.

There's a bumper on ebay was wondering if someone can help me with it. I don't know how to post links, but I typed in 1973 Comet on ebay and a bumper is among some of the items there, can someone tell me if I need the parts talked about on this thread to make this type of conversion, is this the correct bumper and is the price they're asking on point? Thank you. My car is a 73 comet BTW.

    Is this the bumper?

That ad is for a 73 bumper, and is the same bumper that came on your 73. If you want to do a “small” bumper conversion then you need a bumper from a 71-72 Comet.

They can be difficult to find, I lucked out and just payed $200 for a never mounted Ford “service part” 71-72 Comet front, so they are out there.
