157 tooth bellhousing vs 164 tooth bellhousing, 24 spline input shaft vs 26 spline. There are 4 different valve bodies, yada yada yada, check out this website: http://www.mustangcentral.net/tech/c4.html
Thanks! The C4 is in and works with the engine (Put about 5k miles on the engine with it). Crux of the question was whether a C4 rebuild kit for a V8 C4 will drop into a C4 that was originally a 250 C4 from the factory (like the internals of it) - or if there are fundamental internal differences. @previous reply - still have to check the tag - doing upgrades on my jeep and go distracted detailing the engine bay *rolls eyes*
The 24 vs 26 spline is a 1969 vs 1970 change and 157 vs 164T is comparing the compact/intermediate trans to full size and truck. A original Maverick/Comet trans will be 157T, as were every original Mustang & Torino trans I've pulled. There's the original '64 valve body, the '65 & '66 Cruise-O-Matic(two Drive selections), the '67-'69 PRND321, and same for '70 up. I'm not sure it's even possible to bolt the '70 up VB into the earlier trans. The early 1970(69½) used the 1969 transmission, but all those were 6 cyl with high mount starter, used a miniscule converter with welded ring gear that won't fit anything else. The 250 uses same low mount starter as V8. Flexplates for 250 & 302 are balanced differently, swap those and you'll have a giant paint shaker. .
Haha - *confused* - Already did the swap...... already driven with the 302 and this transmission..... Looking to rebuild the tranny now for kicks. Sounds like the internals are the same and any old C4 rebuild kit for a V8 would work without crazy mods?
If tag reads PEE-xxx it's same as V8, the 200 PEB-xxx trans have less clutches. where would the tag usually be? . I'm strictly a three pedal builder but the 76 Comet GT donor had a 200 with a C4. I as surprised to find the 1976 Comet 200 block still had machined the small bellhouse bolt pattern inherited from the earliest Falcon / Comet small block six engine castings for 'peanut' 3spd stick and air-cooled 2 spd Fordamatic. the small bellhouse needs the odd converter but not sure of the C4's internals by '76, Ford was standardizing everything by then 6 vs 8. have fun C4 / 1976 Comet GT 200
I think the tag is on the side of the case (if I remember from the last time I dropped the tranny...) I'll check in a bit - my brand new jeep headlight harness had to be completely re-wired to work yesterday *rolls eyes* - Took me longer than I wanted
