Found a solid Maverick in Texas but it needs love. Anybody knowledgeable on column shift manual steering cars? There is a lot of noise coming from the column. Front end parts are good, even had it aligned but there is a clunk in the steering column. Should I just replace the whole thing or rebuild it? I tried the search..
Welcome. Column is basically similar to other Ford products.. Before condemning the complete assembly, check the rag joint coupler between end of column and steering box. Most of those were loose 20 years ago.
I will take a look at that, thanks. I was weighing options on fixing the original column or replacing with some kind of aftermarket. The wheel I have is junk, the signal switch is wasted and there is this clunk in the column. It seemed like it was adding up quickly.
Welcome to the forum from northeast Illinois! There will be two Maverick/Comet events in your area this July. One in Springfield the other near St. Louis, you might consider attending one or both. I don't have column shift or man steering, but, I would also suspect rag joint if that year car has rag -joint..
Welcome, good luck with your project. Please post some pictures of your car, we all love seeing these old gems.
It looks like you got the pictures figured out Other than the deck lid your Maverick appears to be a great car to start with.
I’ve always liked the turbine wheels. What’s your plans for that beauty, stock restoration, restomod or something else??
I tried to take a close up of the column rag joint area.. Does this look normal? I wonder if that white plastic sleeve should be so visible. There is some play in that area.
