Hi folks. Who can help me with the identification tag i have on my differential on my Maverick here in Australia.
Ok what diff centre do i have here. It is a locked diff so is it supposed to be or has it been messed with. Thanks for your help.
Divide number of teeth on pinion gear into number on ring gear, that'll give ratio. The 9H23 is casting date -- 1969, August, day 23. Not likely original to a '73.
according to your tag WDW-T is 2.79 ratio used in 71-73 Comet/71-74 Mav and is an open diff, not a Trac-Lok.......... Also, Ford Equa or Trac-Lok differential covers have a counterbore below the bolt heads and are also smaller in diameter, I believe 5/8" for lockers versus 3/4" for conventional. David
Thanks guys. I am wondering if it has a Jegs Powertrax non slip in it. Can anyone tell just by the pics or would i need to pull it apart.
First, have you determined if the ratio is 2.79? It is highly unlikely, someone would go through all the trouble of installing something like a Powertrax unit, keep the 2.79 gear ratio and still have the ID tag! With the Powertrax unit, the spyder gears are removed, so you might be able to look through the hole in the side of the carrier to see if they are still there. It looks like you have a 2 spyder gear unit, did you remove the center section from your car or this is something you purchased? If you have both axles, you can insert into the carrier ends, clamp/secure one axle and see how much effort it takes to break loose/turn the other axle. It will take a fair amount of effort to break loose, thus you have a "posi", otherwise the sure way to tell, take it apart....... David how did you determine it is a limited slip? did you actually have it in the car and have both tires lock up? or did someone tell you it was a "posi"?
Thanks everyone. The diff is out of this car and the ratio is 2.79 as i just worked out from Krazy Comets post. When i turn the inside tyre fights against the other and both wheels spin together when jacked up off the ground. I cant see any spyda gears inside as in the pic below. When i look through where the axles go into the diff centre all i can see is the pin and all the splines.
