Fuel gage issues

    I have a 74 maverick 250 issues with fuel gage, at first it always read empty, so I thought being probably the original tank sender I ordered from auto crafter's 2 units always good have spare parts the car has 93000 original miles an came from Texas I live in ont. Canada.anyways replaced the sender now reads full all time?? I replaced the voltage regulator in cluster panel no difference,I get 4.5 volts at the connector at the gas tank yet I cannot figure this out what am I over looking sure could use some help I ran out gas once and don't want that again

    The gauge reads varying resistance of sending unit. I believe resistance should read between 5 ohms to max of 75.

    A continual full reading likely indicates either a shorted sending unit or short in wiring between gauge and sending unit. If it reads full with ign off you likely have a boffed gauge.

    Agree - if you unplug the wire from the new sending unit, does it return to E ?

    With the ignition on the gage always read way past full I disconnected it from the sending unit it returned to empty.connected it back to tank it went to 3/4 ,??

    Classic sign the sending unit has failed. Good news is the wiring is most likely all OK. Replace the sending unit.

    I have already replaced 2brand new sending unit I got from auto crafter's.?

    My maverick has only 96000 original Miles

    At 45 years mileage is totally irrelevant. In the '70s most cars with 100,000 mi were ready for the bone yard.


    You should verify the sending units. If they are correct, there is a issue in gauge, voltage regulator(rear of cluster) or maybe wiring. All that's needed is a volt/ohm meter(Harbor Freight $7-$8).With float at full level, resistance should be around 10 ohms, at empty approx 70-75 ohms.

    Without proper troubleshooting, you're just throwing mud at the wall and hoping it sticks.

    Agree, if the sending unit is new, check it to make sure it has around those numbers. If not, it is either the wrong unit or defective.

    OK I will test it with a meter I have also put in a new voltage regulator in the cluster I appreciate everyone input here thanks I will try tomorrow.

    It may be over 40 year's old with over 90000 miles on it the car same from Texas its flawless but I will test the units thanks.

    The fuel gage ?? Ignition on goes to full. Turn ignition off goes to empty ,put ohm meter on it reads 13.5. The voltage going to the connection is 4.91 volts there is approximately 1/4 tank of fuel in it??? Any idea's
