So I've been trolling your boards for a bit now. Lots of good info on this forum. I don't need a specific parts list or anything, as I've been able to find great info elsewhere on this forum. But - where is a good place to source a master overhaul/rebuild kit for a C4 transmission? Google searching, Summit, and Oregonperformance's websites do not seem too great at making you confident the kit you are looking at is the kit you want. Some background: 71 Mav (250i6 from factory) with original C4 trans, engine has been upgraded to a 302. Let me know if I should post elsewhere about whether I want a 250 C4 rebuild kit or a 302 kit (there seems to be some disagreement over the differences looking through the forum). I do have the badshoe video and it is on my list to watch. I have read PaulS's tech article but all seems alil overkill for what I would need. Street driver only - No strip. Thanks
... I would suggest building it to v8 standards so later if selling or upgrading it to v8 it will be ready/worth more...JMO
Thanks - Any recommendation on where to buy the overhaul kit from? Badshoe sells one... But seems alil on the pricey side for what it is. The trick seems to be finding/trusting what year the rebuild kit is for from other sites that sell them (seems different from site to site). Haynes manual should be delivered tomorrow. Might stay away from the youtubes
The changes in C4 you need to be concerned with happened with 1970 improvements. BTW the 250 transmission is identical to the V8 version.
Hey Tom, I had seen that you posted the same thing in another thread before I posted this one. I had also seen a thread with PaulS discussing internal differences between the 250/302 - left me alittle confused (have yet to tear mine apart).
Look at tag, if it's a PEE-xx(will be various letter combos), hard parts should be same as 302. The PEB prefex trans used with 170/200 have less clutches, was also a beefier PEF version that was used behind 2bbl 351. PEA versions are the pan fill case type used in full size models.
Got a ton of parts from these guys for rebuilds http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/C4_C5_Transmission_parts_s/1859.htm
I couldn't wait.... so this is the second site I've seen to list the rebuild kits as 1970-1981. This would be accurate as to the years for kits then? (I've different year ranges on other kits for C4 and that confused me) Not trying to have to wait for parts once I drop the transmission (but been there and I know it happens)
Thanks guys. Got a bit swamped at work the past week - Hoping to order a kit this week. The haynes manual looks pretty awesome. I'll keep you posted
I've bought kits from rockauto, and found them cheaper locally. The 250 trans should hold up fine behind a 302. IMO, I wouldn't waste money on a "high performance" kit.
Thanks Will I'm thinking about just rebuilding the 250 trans and giving it a go. If it fails I can rebuild again. (Was just playing hooky from work looking at rebuild kits) Don't think I'll ever sell the car - so not too worried about resale options. I remember years ago reading that the 250 was stout enough for a 302 (when I did my engine swap) but don't remember where I read it
Ok - thinking overhaul kit with clutches and steel plates for 70-81 (undecided on vendor yet), the #1 and #2 thrust washers I'm thinking about just getting at the dealership b/c apparently they're specific (unless someone objects - I live across the street from a Ford dealership), I havethe tools, just replaced vacuum modulator with a green stripe less than 2k miles ago so thinking of re-using. Thinking of re-using the filter too.... it's less than 5k miles ago and nothing really wrong with the tranny except it leaks some and I want it off my list. The attached badshoe list makes me question if I need more b/c of their "upgraded" rebuild kit - you guys replace your pump bushing or interm. band? I'm thinking no.... Read PaulS recommended #9 thrust washer but that it was standard - so I'll probably pick one of those up in advance. Sorry for the long post
