I have come to the realization that I want to drive my comet again. It has been 10 years since I drove it and 12-13 since it was licenced last. I have recently decided to sell my Buick and was going to buy a hot rod but I could use that money, invest in some tools and equipment, and have about $4000-$5000 to drop into my car. So that is what I'm going to do. If I keep putting it off I'll be old before I'm driving the car again. These are the most recent pictures of my car. I took them almost 2 years ago. I'll let you guys know when my buick is sold and I start work on the old girl. I plan on documenting everything in videos and posting them on you tube.
I am going to semi gt clone it. I have been collecting parts for the last 15 years. It already has a 351w in it and a 9" rear. I have a t10 out of a 65 mustang I'm going to run. Since it is not a real gt I'm going to do some sort of cyclone gt in the stripes. It will be an early 70's street machine. I have all the parts for a small bumper for the front. I'm keeping the car yellow with the painted white top. I've been thinking about what I wanted to do to this car for years. You would be correct there. I picked it up for $20 about 6 or 7 years ago. It is pretty smashed but the scoop is in great shape.
So, I'm not the only one to ponder "what if the Cyclone had stuck with the Comet body style coming out of the 1960s, instead of migrating over to the Torino?" .... $20 !!! .... I thought I did great getting a scoop in rough shape for $40. Good job there.
I'd be all smiles. As far back as '64 Cyclone shared Fairlane components, '66/'67 they were almost totally Fairlane and again in '68/'69 when Torino came along. In 1970 Cyclone became part of Montego line & Comet name plate was dropped. Well into '70s Torino & Montego were again much the same vehicle.
Yeah it I was thinking about putting cyclone gt in the side stripe instead of comet gt. I might do a few more mods towards that but haven't decided. Yeah the guy I bought the hood fron didn't know what he had. The sad thing was when I showed up there was another guy picking up two engine and tranny combos. One was the 302 and 3 speed manual floor shift that came out of the gt. The guy that was picking up the motors was upset because he wanted the hood scoop. He is a car hoarder and it would have ended up in his pile. I bet that 302 is toast now.
Well I think my Buick is sold. A guy in Kentucky is going to wire me the money for it. He also is also hiring a transport company to come pick it up. I'm thinking sometime next week it will be gone and I can start organizing the garage and hopefully in a month working on my comet. I'm buying a home hobby storage lift and a decent welder. I think I'm going to have my 1970 351w 2v heads, I've had for like 13 years, rebuilt. I talked to a few local machine shops and new valves, seats, screw in rocker studs, valve guides is about $700-$750. I'm getting pretty excited.
Too bad you aren't closer, there is a guy selling a 289 with performer RPM heads for about the same money. You could also consider this setup... https://www.ebay.com/itm/fits-Ford-...292056812325?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10
Yeah I've seen that on Ebay, but I want to run the vintage heads I have. The car already has a 351w in it and i want to keep that in there. I installed it 14 years ago.
This is a great thread. I think the Comet will outperform the Buick in every way....and crush it in the "fun" factor. I started mine four summers ago, with the intent of doing a car before I got "too old".......whatever that is, lol. The Cyclone theme sounds intriguing. Keep us updated for sure.
