Hello everyone, haven’t been on here in a while so here’s a quick update: -The issue I had with car not starting fo 2 years is now fixed. I had a local mechanic check it and despite the fact I had a couple others look at it too, he managed to find the problem in less than a couple of hours. It was a both the ignition coil and distributor In which he fixed. Unfortunately after trying to start the car for those couple of years, the carb had a lot of gunk that it no longer works properly even with a rebuild and new kit. I’ve went with an Edelbrock Carb with a Heat spacer. NOW, I would like to ask something for a new set of wheels! I currently have a 15” Pacer wheels with P245-60R15 tires; They’re about 8” in width, about ~3” in backspacing, and the offset is unknown. I would like to upgrade to a slightly larger tire, no more than a 18” diameter and a 10” width. If anyone has done a similar wheel upgrade to a near stock car or knows what backspacing and offset I need please let me know! I’d like to order soon before winter comes, officially. P.S. I need new wheels since I’ve been to a tire shop about 4 times, to replace the air nozzle on the wheel since I breaks of on its own for being too exposed and also the fact that each time I’ve been told to upgrade to new wheels since my set of wheels are difficult to find tires for.
First i'll say nice car you have there sir. But 2 years out of commission only for problem to be distributor and coil? You should have showed those mechanics how to check for spark. Hope u did'nt get charged. I could only imagine the place you took your car to troubleshoot could not figure how to connect to computer. LoL 15 inch tires are still findable. Check online. You said you wanted 18inch. Price set of 15 inch tires. Price set of 17inch wheels and tires Price set of 18inch wheels and tires. And go from there. I bought nitto 555 18 tires for my stang 1.5 yrs ago. Nice price jump from 17. If u decide to keep your 15 inch go to local parts store and buy shorter valve stems and tell tire place to install with your new tire. Last: find a new tire shop. Enjoy
Thank You! Haha, I probably should've showed them how to check for spark. Funny thing is I check those two and they seemed fine. The guy told me it was a piece of the distributor that was impossible to replace, dont know how true that was but I rather go with it than argue against it. Fortunately I was charged by the one guy for the distributor and coil. One guy just left right after and the other was tipped since he came from a further location. I've already tried replacing the valve stem and it still is happening. I think I want to go with different set of wheels, it's been a long awaited upgraded that's been pushed back and I'd like to do everything I can to improve the traction and stability of the car, especially since winter is coming. I do want to add that I want to have the rear set to be wider than the front, even though i've been told that the stability wont be the same as the same wheels all around. Those link are all 15s. Have you decided against 18's? If yellow car in your link is yours and those wheels are 15's those would be my my first choice.
I'm like 70/30 in favor for the 15"s. Im still looking at other sizes but by the looks of it, 1 wheel alone can cost up to $300 alone if not more! The 10" is the width I plan on the rear wheels and the 8" is the width I plan for the front wheels. I do think I will go with 15"s since there is a larger variety in options. Suggestions?!
Your leaky valve stem problem got me rubbing my head. Are you having problems with all 4 wheels or just 1? When tire shop replaced stem did they unmount tire to install new stem? Please take a good pic of your problem and post. Everything you've posted suggests inexperience mechanics. I'm no mechanic either but i've been tinkering at this hobby for over 25 yrs.
Looks like you have a taste for the truck style wheels. Nothing wrong with that but if it were me, I would steer away from the fake bead lock wheels. Good question, if they didn't break the tire down they are just replacing the core and not the actual valve stem.
Okay...thats why i suggest you compare price of 15, 17 and 18. Cost is a factor that should be considered. 71gold asked a specific question. What size tires u want to install. You may not even need 10 inch wide. 7 on front and 8 on back can work. I had 275/60/15 on 8 in wide cragar ss.
I work for American Tire Distributors ... the largest tire wholesaler in the US. Expanding in Canada, too, as National Tire Distributors. My forecast for the immediate future is that 15s will still be available in a decent variety of sizes, but in a limited number of brands sensitive to older musclecars, BFG and Cooper for regular duty tires. A few available from Hankook, but their sizing is limited. Nitto has its 555 model DOT legal drag radial, too. Those are focused mainly on drag strip duty, I would look to the other brands for cornering abilities. The future is not so good in the 14 inch sizes these cars originally came in, especially performance sizes. Some odd 16 inch sizes are starting to go away too. For comparison, new cars are mostly going to 18 inch and up wheel sizes, and tire manufacturers tend to focus the most on current models. You did not post a location, but if you are in the US, look to a dealer that can get tires from ATD (Canada - NTD). Or you can shop online at TireBuyer and have tires shipped to an installer .... https://www.tirebuyer.com/ You will need to shop by size because the online guides don't go back far enough for our cars and would only cover factory sizing. Anybody try to buy a D70-14 lately?
You just need a new valve stem installed in that wheel. They do make a couple different size stems. It's possible that at some point along the way someone put a stem for a large opening in the smaller hole cutting it. I would break it down and put a new stem in and clean the wheels up. - Matt
I could try the new stem but I know that it will blow out again. Ive tried also cleaning the wheels but the rust wont come off. Ive tried it with WD40 and a wire brush and drying it right after but it always came back.
