Just joined forum. Bought my daughter a 77 Maverick for her first car. It has a straight six and auto transmission however, not sure on specs yet. Strangely it has grabber mirrors but nothing else to identify it as that trim package (I think). I will take pictures and post tomorrow.
Lots of normal Mavericks, including 4-doors, came with sport mirrors from the factory. Welcome aboard.
Factory Air Conditioning and power disc brakes. Somewhat rare options. Curious: Why a MAVERICK for a first car instead of a Focus or Taurus, etc.?
It is what SHE wanted. I have an 86 CJ7 and she got the bug for a classic car. She found this one on FB marketplace with her mom. We took it for a test drive and she fell in love with it.
Nice pictures. Car looks very clean and well cared for. Should be lots of fun for you and your daughter. FYI - you asked about the mirrors. As mentioned, they came on many cars that had nothing to do with a special model like the Grabber. Also, last year for a Grabber was 75. As far as I know, 77 had no special models other than a few hundred made for Police Service. 1977 was the last year produced here in the USA (2 more years in Brazil) and it was the lowest production year of all the years. If you ever need to take the instrument cluster out, for whatever reason, be very careful as the instrument housings were made out of a plastic after 1974 that has not held up well over time. They are extremely fragile and will crumble into pieces when handled.
Thanks, I hope I never have to take the instrument cluster out! I think we really lucked out on this one, it only has 66k original miles! Now I need to find a Maverick group in south central TX.
Kewl, welcome. Hope she enjoys her new Maverick... Back when, most vehicles had mirror options, sometimes separate or included in a package. I have no info on '77 but '71 convenience package included lighter, inside day/night mirror & driver side racing mirror, no mention of right side. My Comet originally was optioned with the LDO package(luxury decor option), I suspect that's how it gained it's racing mirrors. Possibly added with the convenience package. My Cobra Jet had no mirror option, came from factory with a single manual(grab and twist) driver mirror & none on passenger side(can you say blind spot that would hide a semi & half of a Greyhound bus?). Available were chrome remote and racing options, I wasted no time adding racing mirrors.
The Maverick Comet Club International (MCCI) is very active in Texas, with (3) mini-meets a year. Find out more at: www.MaverickCometClub.org
My 72 Mach I has sport mirrors on both sides, the safest way I’ve found to change lanes is...turn signal on, gas pedal on floor & ease into other lane.
Cool. A friend of mine bought his 16 year-old daughter a '66 Fairlane for her first car. Same story; she fell in love with it when she saw it. It's a project car that runs & drives...
Yeah, it is strange. My son wants nothing to do with old cars or car repairs but my daughter loves old cars, couldn’t wait to learn how to drive my CJ7 and it was love at first sight with her Maverick. This one runs great but I do need to adjust the carburetor, slight hesitation on acceleration that won’t do her any favors with TX drivers.
Be sure the flapper in air cleaner is routing warm air to carb, especially when engine is cold. Carbs in the mid/late '70s were so lean they commonly hesitated without the warm air. Going a bit rich on idle adj may help. Also make sure base timing is at least on recommended setting. A bump in advance usually livens up the bottom end but beware it may spark knock when hot.
