In my ongoing journey to ditch my front bench seat as I find it uncomfortable and doesn't seem very safe given how low the headrests are, I ran across this pair of buckets: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-auto-body-parts/ottawa/1970-original-mustang-seats/1484217017 I have the following questions before I contact the guy: Is $200 CAD a fair price for these seats given these need a refinish? Acknowledging this one is totally subjective... how do these compare to the 71-73 high backs? (i.e. do they fit well? are they comfortable?). Per my profile I have a '73 Comet. Thank you in advance. I should add, I do not have the tracks yet but will be posting a request for those if these seats are a go.
Those don't look like 70 Mustang seats. The latch, shape and seat base look wrong. I have a seat I'm installing in mine and they are very similar to Maverick seats. I didn't bother looking for tracks, I made spacers and replaced the studs with longer grade 8 bolts. A 5/16 hex bolt head drops in the track perfectly and locks in on the flats.
Says "Asking $200" so they will probably take less. I did not think they look too bad as far as condition. Price seems fair to me for what I can see.
Rick, your seats look like 1970-1971 Torino seats. Hi dollar to the Torino guys! I paid almost $500 for a pair not in that good of shape. The foam and covers are slightly larger than their 70 Mustang and Cougar counterparts. - Matt
Thanks Matt, that's go to know. I was never able to find good pictures of Torino seats but thought they looked very similar to the pictures of Mustang seats I found. I was talking to my brother last night (he gave me the seats) and he was pretty sure they were Torino as well.
Yea, I wish there were a good way to get these headrests up higher for safety. I purchased a rear headrest from a Range Rover, with some modifications it fit nicely over the existing headrest and brought the fit up and forward just enough to support my head well in a rear end collision. Its secured very tightly with velcro straps and can be easily removed for car shows. Also a good center mount brake light is a plus for safety. You'd think someone would market a high back, reinforced molded plastic seat back that you could just strap in place on any vintage car.
Craig, you are correct they do appear to be in good condition. But canuck222 clearly says he’s looking for something more comfortable and I know that you have sat in a 50 year old seat.... was it “comfortable”?
I have the 1971-1972 bucket seats in my 1972 Grabber, and I find them comfortable. But probably not as comfortable as the seats in my Fusion.
The seats in my 72 Mustang (same high backs as Maverick) are as hard as a rock and uncomfortable after just a few minutes.
From everything I'm reading, it sounds like I should focus on getting the tracks first and then go to the wreckers to test out some seats unless a bargain comes up for the older period correct seats. Thanks for the input guys.
