Hello Maverick/Comet community, I will be upgrading the carb. on my 1974 250inline 6 Maverick in the upcoming days. ( I will be creating another post soon). I would like to learn a bit more of the surrounding components before I tackle the job so I can know what I can eliminate or not need to install. The carb I am looking at is the Holley 2300 350cfm. I am hoping I can do this install while keeping my original hood. In the first picture: 1. This long skinny rubber line runs to the back firewall. It is connected to the right side of 1 of 2 outlets. What does it do? 2. What is the purpose of this metal line? The bends on mine look poorly done. 3. This rubber line that runs to the valve cover, seems to also be connected to the EGR components. Will I need to replace this piece, if so, does someone have a part #? I am assuming it will still connect to the same area and also to the valve cover but eliminate the spot where it connects to the egr stuff? 2nd Picture: This might be unrelated, but what is this thing? And what is it's purpose? Passenger side, lower area. Thank you!
The 2300-350 (Holley 7448) is a popular upgrade and should add some fun to the torquey' 250 if properly swapped. The swap is usually straightforward with a few simple mods , hood clearance can be an issue. Is it possible in Calif' to make such mods to '74 carb cars ?. Just follow your Vacuum connections from the manifold splitter. Should be a Vac line to the Distributor advance, Vac line to Automatic Tranny Modulator and others depending on cars' regional origin . Thermal - Vac switched ignition advance or on secondary advance line on some 250's. More pics w/o air cleaner needed... there's a simple adapters to mount the 2300 Holley on the 250's big 1Bbl carb throat or a 'direct mount' can be fabricated. https://www.vintageinlines.com/carb-adapters This 2 X 1 adapter in pics below: Adapter eliminates EGR adapter below carb. https://www.vintageinlines.com/product-page/autolite-holley-1v-2v-adaptor-large-log the '74 then: . the 74 now with 2300/350 and a few other mods: . .(.to position carb with fuel bowl over VC away from exh., a spacer was needed to raise carb another 1/2 ".) Stock 250 Air cleaner is very shallow and easily modified and common (Mr Gasket?) triangle air cleaner bottom plate can be flipped for extreme close fit on 2300's. . hav efun
Super clean setup! I would love to have something like that someday! I do not need to worry about California's regulations given my car's year. To be clear, I will need the Holley carb, the 2x1 adapter for a LARGE log (the one you linked), new gasket, new air filter. Is there anything else I need to order? Can I still use the fuel filter I have now? What type of air filter is show on the second picture? Does that air filter clear the hood issue? Like you said, the swap should be straight forward correct? Remove the old carb/gasket/egr stuff. Install 2x1 adapter, new gasket, and then new carb? Will the new 2x1 have an outlet to connect the rubber line that runs to the VC? Thanks!
My 'clean' Maverick engine bay needed two weeks of wire wheel and solvent - (engine out/me in) to get the sticky thick spray on undercoater' goop off everything to repaint ... '74 250 should have a Dxxx number on cylinder head with large 1Bbl bore and alum adapter for EGR/PCV. My 74 250 has D2DE head = 1972 First letter is C for 60's, D for 70's, E for 80's '1966 head: Specific adapter used may eliminate PCV hose but the Holley 2300 has one on side anyway. ,,, here's different adapter widely available (@ $ 20.oo! ) but without nice machined smooth insert: . . pic of Maverick sourced throttle setup on my '63. Fuel filter and fuel line will need to adapt in to 2300.. Straightforward but plenty of simple 'issues' to be resolved along the way - but nothing someone here cant help you with. Accelerator linkage, AC, tuning and Dist.Vac source are variables as well.... Have safe Fun
What type of air filter is show on the second picture? Does that air filter clear the hood issue? The 'triangle ' air filter is easily modified tio almost flush with 2300 carb air horn https://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-1002 The Maverick hood is the lowest of any of the early Falcon platform Fords and is an issue to be figured out. A simple hole in the hood is fast and easy but 'snorkel' piping to an air cleaner is also possible if carb fits under hood. https://www.ebay.com/p/669144880?ii...MIuZrw0_OI6QIVFY_ICh2m0wn8EAQYBCABEgIeE_D_BwE ' . have fun
That triangular filter is crap and I personally wouldn't run one again. I had one on a car in high school, one back fire will singe the foam allowing it to break free and get sucked into the engine. I honestly can't believe they still sell them.
... still available and in stock in most 'box' auto parts stores in 'performance aisle' next to stick on hood scoops. ... maybe we can fix that backfire, strictly MBTN when used, (maybe better than nothing) . https://www.autozone.com/intake-sys...triangle-air-cleaner-1002/500009_592267_18928 .. or the stock Mav' 250 RBS carb air cleaner can simply be modified with snips and BFH. . have fun
Considering high school was over 30 years ago they may have improved to foam since then too! Always seem to forget that, my mind still swears I'm in my 20's.
the older I get , the better I was... Mlover : there's a parallel thread over at FordSixPerformance.com forums with some nice pics of 250 2 X 1 adapter Holley swap. ' . https://fordsix.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=80531
Thanks for the info!!!! I just ordered the Holley Carb, the gasket, and the 2v-1v adapter (vintage inlines). The carb is a manual choke so I will look into how to set that up. The adapter looks really good in the photos from the fordsix post! What spacer do I need to clear the VC but keep my original hood? I do not want to cut my hood. Is the air filter that you sent above (https://www.ebay.com/p/669144880?ii...MIuZrw0_OI6QIVFY_ICh2m0wn8EAQYBCABEgIeE_D_BwE) the same as the one pictured in the fordsix post? Will it clear my hood?
What spacer do I need to clear the VC but keep my original hood?. Inexpensive Mr Gasket Holley to Weber adaptor may works as a spacer but makes carb 1/2" taller with carb bowl over VC. I do not want to cut my hood. Is the air filter that you sent the same as the one pictured in the fordsix post? ... Will it clear my hood? Cant tell - to many variables , carb orientation ... have fun https://www.summitracing.com/search...&SortOrder=Ascending&keyword=2 barrel adapter
Awesome, thank you again! Just ordered the spacer (adapter) you linked. I will wait to order the air clear, get some recommendations after I install it. If I find a second 250 air cleaner I might even try that. I really just don’t want to cut my hood. I have a strong feeling I will be replying in a couple of days when everything arrives and I am doing the install...
Heater hose valve. It's purpose is to block off hot water from going through your heater core when the AC is on.
Thanks for the answer Craig! If I removed my AC, is it serving a purpose? Should I leave as is regardless or can I remove it to clean underneath my hood? If I remove it, do I have to block anything off on the firewall? Thank you!
