What did you do to your Maverick or Comet today

    I'm sorry, that's no joy. Can you pull the head and take it to a machine shop? That would involve significant extra pain, but it should eventually work. Then again, If you were already planning to upgrade your heads, this is the time.

    There are several ways to remove that broken bolt/extractor, just depends on what your time is worth and what your original plan was once the bolt was remove. Where you going to reinstall the intake and drive your Maverick or install new aluminum heads, rebuild the motor etc........
    There are several youtube vids on how to remove, one in particular with you head still on the motor........

    Again, it all comes down to how much your time is worth, I have had similar experience in the past where I used a carbide burr in a dremel to remove as much of the hardened extractor, then using a LH cobalt drill bit, drilled and removed the bolt.
    Another method, since the extractor is usually quite hard, you might be able to "chip" and break away in pieces the extractor, your original "pilot" hole would be exposed and then you can drill out the bolt using a LH bit........good luck!

    Thanks David. That was a pretty neat video. Upgrading was always in the long term plans, but I guess I have an excuse to now. Definitely will look into getting of there for future projects though.

    Fresh bolts always near water with antiseze!

    My concern, your water pump bolt near water inlet.

    Sold a 66 mustang cowl hood to a gentleman a few weeks ago, and while talking to him he mentioned he had a wrecked maverick at his shop. Went to go look at it today and needless to say he is now enjoying a nice new hood while I now have a decent parts maverick in my back yard. ;) It has perfect doors so I am pretty happy! 136BD96E-99D9-4A70-BD71-C1A8E4C0AD74.jpeg

    Pulled the plugs and five out of eight are pretty oily after 1,500 miles of intermittent city driving. I started doing a compression test and stopped after cylinder #1, which was only moderately oily -- 100 lb dry and 132 wet -- in other words, rings. Kind of explains why it runs like a three-cylinder when first starting. Actually, it runs remarkably well, considering. But the motor is going to have to come out. Meanwhile I put Autolite 45s (normal plug) in the dry holes and 46s (one grade hotter) in the wet ones. I've never mixed heat ranges before, but I don't the plugs are not going to be in there all that long.

    It is going to be cut up and parted out. It has been hit twice in its life time in the front and rear. You can see where they did horrible old repairs. The second hit totaled the far. The amount of work it would take to repair the car isn’t worth the effort. So I’ll go through it and save what I can.

    It’s actually a 70 maverick so it’s unfortunate it’s too far to save.

    put it on the lift and went over some bolt/nut tightening.
    need to replace a busted motor mount, looks like the rubber just crumbled.

    stamped...made in USA
