Currently building my first maverick and picked up a set of American racing wheels for dirt cheap. They are 15s and 8 in wide is anyone else running that size rim that I could get help with the best tire size that will fit in the wheel wells and still turn without rubbing? It might just be me but it looks like it will be tight, and I’d like to keep the muscle car beefy wheel look. Thanks
255x6015s in back...you may need to run a 70 series tire in front ,the 8" rim is a little wide for the front...JMO
I agree with Frank, 255/60-15 on a 8 inch wheel for the rear (click on my avatar that’s what’s on my Comet). 8 inch may be to wide for the front, I have 7 inch wide wheels for the front but still haven’t decided on tire size, possibly 215/65-15 & I believe that’s what Frank’s running. EDIT: All of my wheels have 3-3/4 back spacing This the information I found & what folks are running for tire size. Comet wheel/tire combo’s FRONT 14x7 w/ 225/60-14s 15x5 w/ 195/65-15s 15x7 w/ 225/60-15s 16x7 w/ 245/45-16s 3-1/2 or 4 inch backspacing Front 17x7 w/ 245-40/17s 4 inch backspacing. REAR 14x8 w/ 235/60-14s 15x8 w/ 245/60-15s 15x8 w/ 255/60-15s or G-60/15s 15x8 w/ J-60/15s (M&H racemasters) 16x8 w/ 255/50-16 3-1/2 or 4 inch backspacing 18x8 w/ 275/35-18 4 inch backspacing
Frank and BBMS18 are probably correct concerning the front wheels. You did not indicate the all important back spacing of your wheels. Accurate information even for rear wheel fitment cannot be provided without knowing the back spacing of your wheels. The GARAGE section of this site contains wheel and tire information on member cars under WHEELS and TIRES along with pictures of these cars with their wheels. Unfortunately; it appears the number of listed member cars and their wheels has been confined to one page.
Backspacing is the key. Unless you run a narrow tire up front, you want at least a 4-inch backspace. Rear can be anywhere from 3-3/4 to 4-1/4 depending on rim width and tire size...
15x8 on the rears with 255/60-15, unsure of the backspacing. 15x7 on the front with 4 inch backspace and 235/60-15.
Yes it is a 72 with a 73 stripe. The one in the background is a 75 Maverick that was rear ended and totaled, which lead to the purchase of the 72 Comet.
