Lately I have noticed a lot of slop in my column shifter handle. The shift indicator stays put so I think the play is all in the handle. I tried to attach a video but cannot, below are a couple of photos at the top and bottom of the handle slop while in drive, it is about 2 inches total. Any ideas what could be the cause and how to fix it?
Yes, to replace the collar the wheel must be removed. You may want to examine the linkage before you do or purchase anything. IIRC there is a nylon grommet that the linkage connects to near the end of the column under the hood. If that grommet was damaged it could give you some slop in the linkage.

You should be able to tell by looking at the collar and lever. If the slop is all in the lever and the collar does not move, it is probably as Tom stated, new collar needed. If the slop is from the collar moving and not the lever, it could be linkage.
Could be as simple as the drift pin has moved. The drift pin holds the chrome rod to the steering column collar. Very common problem on an old Ford. The one on my 1976 Maverick does this. Move the pin back and all is good.
Hey Craig, I think you are spot on here! It looks like that pin has slipped down and it is not even engaged with the top hole in the shift collar.
All set now. I just tapped that pin back up into place with a small hammer and no more play in the shifter! Thanks Craig.
Thanks Jason that drawing is nice to have on hand. As it turns out, Craigs suggestion to check that shift lever drift pin was my only problem. I just tapped it back up into position and I'm all set now.
If roll pin is worn, can always get a new one at any hardware store or a #8 bolt will fit fine too......... David
