Hello everyone, I'm looking for advice for a front brake setup the is lighter than stock, I have discs already but would love to lose some rotational weight. What is the lightest setup that anyone knows of. Thanks in advance for your help. Terry
Hey Terry! Gary here. Wilwood makes a drag only brake set up. You'll just have to get the correct hubs to fit your spindles. Hoping to see you soon! Take care.
I put Aerospace on mine a decade or so ago. I don't run the car much, maybe once a season if I'm lucky. The calipers stick. On their own. They can sit all winter and all summer and part of the next winter, in the trailer (never raced in that time) and the first time I push the pedal down it never fails at least one caliper is going to stick. For a while I fought it. I called Aerospace many times, no solution. Called some other people I know and they all unanimously said that it's not uncommon with the calipers I am using. Noone knows what causes it, including the engineers at aerospace apparently because their response was always "hmm...never heard of it", after asking a bunch of questions which I answered with accuracy (bore concentric, piston, bore depth, fluid type, moisture content, acidity level, etc). I kept two spare calipers on hand at all times for the very purpose. Anyway, they ARE light. That's all they are, is light. Saved about 110 lbs over the Mustang II stock calipers/rotors/etc combined with 9" big bearing rear disc setup. The whole box that contained all 4 rotors, 4 calipers, hardware, brackets, etc weighed around 40 lb if I remember right. That was the shipping weight, box, staples, tape, labels, bubble wrap, all of it. It was packaged pretty good. Mind you, on mine I am using 2 piston race calipers on the front and 4 piston race calipers on the rear. All are fixed mount (not floating). I don't know if it makes any difference. The people I talked to outside aerospace have all asked whether they were floating or fixed. I can't say why, didn't ask them if it made any difference. After my dealing with that I made a call to TBM. They will be going on as soon as I can gather up a little extra cash. I can do it on a card like everyone else but I have been debt free for years and no plans to change that. TBM setup is going to set me back roughly $2500 (all 4). Aerospace is a little cheaper and a little less expensive. I want to say "for good reason" but maybe they've identified a cause of "my" issues within the last 2 1/2 years. Regardless I'm done with them. The sticking caliper does hurt ET and especially MPH. I'm usually down about 0.04-0.07 in the 1/8 and typically 2-8 mph depending on which caliper. The rears grab harder and if one of those sticks it's a significant change. Drives me nuts.
Probably asking if they are floating because if they were it could be a hardware issue. It sucks to have an issue you can't pin down a fix for, no doubt it's been frustrating.
Thanks Gary, that's exactly what I did, got them installed and went to Eastside to try everything out but like normal the track was crap from the starting line. I'll be at Mason-Dixon on Memorial Day weekend hope to see you and the entire family.
Got TBM F3 on the rears now. Finished that up earlier all except the hoses. Fronts will be ordered probably next week, then I get to go racing again. Yay. 'Course I could always race the sprint now that it's running correctly. Decisions, decisions.
