Hello Everyone, Are there any good videos showing how to replace the ignition switch on a 71 Maverick\Comet or in general. I know it is down on the column but I don't know all the issues with getting to it, replacing and what to set up and look for. I've checked Youtube but not much there unless my search words were bad. First time trying to do this myself so I don't want to make things worse. Thanks!
...that picture says a thousand words... first off...most aftermarket ignition switches are not that reliable. it's a pretty simple plug and play install (2 bolts)...that is if you can get under the dash...LOL most new switches come with a pin stuck in the switch to keep it set in the correct position for installing. just bolt it down and pull the pin. the pin in the one I bought was red. that switch lasted maybe 2 months before it came apart. I replaced it with the old one that I had removed, that was maybe 10-12 years ago... It wasn't that there was anything wrong with the old switch it was because I had the steering column out doing my rack n pinion install and thought it would be a good idea to replace it while I had the column out...wrong!.
Thanks for the photo and info. Looks like I may need to get some adjustable\wratcheting wrenches to get to the bolts holding the switch down. It looks as if the switch could be moved back and forth. How taught does the connection with the bar from the key tumbler need to be? Also, when undoing the bolts holding up the column do I have to support it or will it fall a certain amount and hold itself. Sorry for all the questions but I want to be prepared for what happens.
Replacement isn't difficult, back in day ratchet wrenches were yet to be invented(at least that were not cumbersome). Really no different from Torino or Mustang of same year. Should be half bazillion Mustang videos on Youtube. Most of these low volume parts are produced by one mfgr, all the vendors usually sell same.
I usually take the car out on the weekends. Lately when I turn the key it takes a second or two for the engine to start. It used to start right up as soon as the key was turned just a little past Alt. I have a voltage gauge and when I move the key out of the the lock position to the Alt position my voltage reads so I figured it was not a key cylinder issue or a starter solenoid problem. Funny thing is after driving for a while and I stop the car it will start right back up immediately once the key is turned if it is still warmed up.
I thought the same thing about Youtube. But when I do a search they all have to do with the key cylinder replacement when I search for "ignition switch replacement".
Doesn't necessarily sound like an ignition switch issue if I read that correctly. If it's starting, runs and shows voltage in all the right places it sounds like the switch is doing its job. Just hate to see a guy go through that wonderfully entertaining job of swapping the switch if it isn't the problem.

Any advice on what I can look for. The only other thing I have noticed is the Alt light in the dash does not light up when I turn the key to the Alt position. It will go on once the car turns over. Could that mean starter solenoid? I have had issues with them in the past.
What are you calling "turning over"? To a mechanic it means engine cranking, not necessarily starting. Are you saying cranking is delayed, OR starting is delayed after engine cranks.?
I mean to say "cranking" is delayed when i turn the key. The engine starts right up after it cranks over.
