Hey All, I'm tossing around the idea of getting a Painless Wire kit for my 75 Mav. The original wiring had some gremlins and the previous owner(s) look like they tried add things here and there, so I gutted it. Is it worth the purchase and which kit would best suit a cruiser. Looking at the 21 Circuit Classic Customizable Chassis Harness (P/N 10101). Thanks in advance!
21 Circuit Classic Customizable Chassis Harness (P/N 10101) from what I read it has all GM connectors. "This kit comes with a pre-terminated GM column mounted ignition switch connector. Included with this harness are the following parts; a GM engineered fuse block & Painless mounting bracket; GM turn signal connectors. for me the choice was... https://www.ronfrancis.com/product/545 headlights to tail lights.
Thanks Frank. It's weird that when you enter 75 Mav, that's what comes up and it says "Universal." Was the installation relatively easy?
You could get away with less circuits unless you plan to add a lot of modern accessories like power windows, locks and such. I bought the speedway 21 circuit and won't be using it to capacity even adding power windows and locks to mine.
Yeah, not planning to do a lot of electronics. I have a newer car as my daily and there's way too much. Do you have a link to that wiring kit?
the ease is what you make of it. I got all the Ford style plugs and connectors, that way I had no butt splices from headlights to tail lights. the control box is labeled for each circuit. it worked nice for my .. Here it is, it has GM connectors but I sourced the pieces needed to use it with Ford connectors. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/22-C...ve-Aftermarket-Wiring-Harness-Kit,229874.html
why would a new wiring harness come with 25+ butt splices? scroll picture over to the accessories that come with the kit. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/22-C...ve-Aftermarket-Wiring-Harness-Kit,229874.html
Just because they come with them doesn't mean you have to use them. It's actually a pretty nice harness for the money. All my connections are being made with proper crimp terminals. The thing that turned me off on the one from Ron Francis is the connections at the fuse block, reminds me of the breaker box in my garage. I would rather be hard wired than use a grub screw for the connections. Probably works fine but it's not my cup of tea.
So I bought the Painless kit because it had a few more things I was looking for. It came with a 140+ page book, lots of connectors and the wires are labeled really well. Wires are long enough to reach the nose of a Caddy, I swear. Yes, it's a big more plug-and-play for a GM application, but the book does have instructions for Ford and Mopar as well. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. Haven't really found a downside.
None of them are really painless! The American Autowire harness I installed for a friend would have been better off recycled for the copper in the harness.
In my opinion the one I used was compared to the Painless and the Speedway harnesses I have used. Quality of the parts was good but I was not a fan of how the wires attached to the fuse block. Purely personal preference, just not one I would use again.
