I have a duraspark 2. All works well. I have it on a switch powering the module main 12V. I then have the other wire powers by coil/solenoid. I flip the switch start the car and all is well. Stop the car turn off the switch. I have a friend who is telling me if I forget to kill the switch after turning off the car, the module will burn up. Is this true? edit: I should clarify, that i mean leave the switch on and 12V applied to the module without the car running.
I dunno but I do know the Dura Spark boxes will throw a spark when ign is first turned on. Tells me box is on, ready and waiting for pulse to be sent from distributor. If you don't have the resistor in the feed to coil, you're risking damage to box and/or coil.
That is not a kill switch. A kill switch cuts off all power from the battery to the car. It is common on race cars...
I accidently left the key on all night. Got up the next day and the Duraspark box guts melted all down the inner fender.
The older units are famed for the sealing resin to deteriorate into jelly. Apparently the heat of being on continually hastened the process. Next door neighbor has a '79(I think) Jeep with Duraspark. Before he cut it up, jelly from that box had run down the firewall. It was still running.
