Hi all, thanks for the acceptance to the forum! So glad for resources like these forums. New to Mavericks but not new to wrenching. Just picked up a 74' 250 about a week ago. Running but rough. Going through and slowly replacing parts (wires, cap/rotor, plugs, coil, starter relay, battery cables, etc...). Just ordered a carb rebuilt kit and repair manual, so waiting on that, but wanted to hop on here for some advice.

I replaced the three belts on this car. Dual belts for Alt/AC/water pump and single belt for power steering. Noticed after firing up that the dual belt pulley that's on the crank is loose. I can scoot it forward (toward rad) and back (toward engine) with my hands. Wondering what's going on here? Saw another post of a similar issue and they ended up replacing the Harmonic balancer. Is this pulley supposed to be attached to the HB? Is there a sleeve that's missing or bolts loose or something? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Pulley should not be loose. Is it just the pulley or is the balancer loose also?
the pulley has 3-4 bolts holding it to the balancer. Balancer has one large bolt that holds it on the crank snout.

I believe it's just the pulley. Good to know about the bolts, thank you! I'll have to pull apart and inspect.

That pulley should just bolt onto the harmonic balancer. Check that.

Thank you. Pulled it off and the single pulley (power steering) does indeed bolt on. But the dual pulley (alternator/AC) that is behind the single is just floating free on the balancer. Seems like there was a sleeve that fit in the pulley to secure it to the balancer. Not sure though. Researching.

Also, not seeing a new harmonic balancer online for a 250. Any leads on that?

3 bolts for the single pulley. There's a dual pulley behind that one and that's what is loose. No way to attach...seems like a sleeve degraded or something.

    I think that's a fairly common problem on 250.

Just hang on, some of the 6cyl guys will probably show up..

Thinking maybe it's just the pulley that needs to be replaced, though after 50 years it probably wouldn't hurt to replace the balancer too. Not seeing much for the 205's...mostly all 302.

as told, disintegrated bonding rubber sleeve can deteriorate - more typical in early sixes. Slippage of outer with timing marked pulley can confuse tuning attempts
    .
... jus sayin' - if you take a 5.0 6 groove belt crank pulley and weld it on a 250's bolt-on PS pulley, you can drive a 6 rib forced induction device pulley from the 250's crank with a few more mods'.
