For 1971 the ENTIRE trunk should be spatter paint ... this includes 1/4 panels and rear seat braces and sound deadener. Here are the pics the engine bay and trunk. The dark areas indicated black paint for engine compartment and spatter paint in trunk ... the spatter paint drawing has a revision of 8/24/1970 ... as I said above the engine compartment has a 7/6/1970 revision date. These are in the 1971 body engineering manual though. My Grabber was built January 11, 1971 and had body color engine compartment. I could kick myself but never did take a picture of the trun before restoration Here is my Spatter job as per the manual ... and my original red engine compartment .. My car was actually a gold mine as far as originality and I wish I had documented it better ... it had numerous stampings in the engine compartment like Mustangs that I didn't bother documenting. Here is the car when I got it .... it had been off the road since 96 ...
What alternator bracket can be used to hybrid that later model water pump to the older cars? Just curious. I wanted one to clean up the 'lines' of the engine, but figured that the alternator bracket would not work because the lack of bosses on that pump. Thanks Dave
Even with as long and hard of a life as my '72 has had, several of the factory markings amazingly were still on it when I got it. The hood I got from Terry also has a factory stamp still on it. But unlike my Grabber, I didn't find a build sheet unfortunately. I suspect who ever had the seats recovered found and kept it. I did find a piece of paper stuck to the bottom of the factory carpet that you could barely make out the word "MAVERICK" on it. Didn't get a pic of that though.
I just had a question pop in my head. Why do we consider what to paint the engine bay, but not the trunk? If the engine bay is going to be painted body color, shouldn't the trunk be the sane color?[/QUOTE] Maybe not, if your in"sane" .j/k That trunk looks nice dm . Did you do that?
The absolute best thing about the car hobby is individuality. I knew somebody had painted their trunk body color. Congratulations to you.:Handshake I had to some major repair to the trunk in my '77 and I'm going to spray the trunk with bedliner to give it a uniform look and make it a little more durable.
Ok Terry, I think I know what other types of sites your on when you are not on here. That wouldn't be your feet I see under there? j/k That might be me spending that dollar though
I don't go to those places nor visit many other sites. It's amazing what you kind find by using a Goggle search of images.
I wanted to do my engine compartment body color as well...but my boyfriend does auto restoration for a day job, and said that it would be very hard to keep looking nice, because of how small my engine compartment is...it is hard to get in all the tight areas...and waxing it would be really tough...so he convinced me to do it black. We actually used rustoleum, but we reduced it, and sprayed it out of a spray gun. I did spend hours in my engine compartment without the motor, with a hamburg wheel grinding out all the old paint, and surface rust....but you would need to do an even more through pjob with body color, becuase that shows all the imperfections in the surface. the semi-gloss hides alot... Came out very good in my opinion..Check it out... Hope this helps with your decision.
