Ok, so the dash is off the car 100%. it's black, but faded with age, what do I do? I haven't tried just cleaning it up yet, but i'm doubtful that alone will work. what all have you guys done to make it look new again. and the broken dash pad? I'll do some searching on that, not sure what I'll come across.
I painted mine. It's all metal so I treated it just like any other bodywork. Scuffed it up and shot it with a single stage semi-flat paint. Looks like brand new. As for the dash pad, I had mine upholstered to match my seats. It covered up the cracks and added a custom touch. The black dashes had a bit of metalflake. I used 'black charcoal metallic' lacquer from a rattle can. The body guy didn't do mine, but I'm sure your guy can match it up. Seth
You can get the correct black in paintgun sprayable form via dupont interior paint chip chart. I will dig up the can i have and get the actual number next time I venture to the garage in this sub zero weather. I matched my Stallion perfectly when I replaced my lower dash. Dan
Yup .. and if you don't paint it the correct color it will not match your instrument cluster or heater control cover. Take a close look at them and you'll notice they are charcoal metallic as well ...
awesome, I'm so glad I put this post up, I was one can of flat black away from a new dash if you run across that paint code, that would be MUCH appreciated..Jeremy
Not sure about the original paint ... but I used to have a 1984 Mustang GT that was Dark Charcoal Metallic. I had bought a can of touchpaint for it to fix a scratch. I actually used the left over paint to redo the dash in my Grabber and I think it matches perfect.
very interesting, wonder if it is the same stuff. as well, dash is off the car right now, would it be best to paint it off the car, or on the car...I'm just worried of scratching it during install.
My uncle restored his dash recently... He told me his plans and I didn't think it would work, but it turned out awesome! He had the black dash with bright trim and black pad. Anyway, he used a boat engine paint! I think it was Mercury black paint, but not sure. It is gorgeous and went on great. The paint is an almost black, but not quite, charcoal with heavy metal flake content. Also has anti-corrosion elements that you would expect for boat engine paint. Looks like a perfect match to my 75 dash anyway. Don't know about other years. On the dash pad, he went to the local craft chain, want to say Micheal's, but not sure. Picked up a yard of black grain texture vinyl. He covered his dash pad with that, carefully stretching and gluing the material as he went. It took time and patience to keep it smooth around corners and such, but after stretching and resting, it contoured great. I never would have believed it could be done so nice without seeing it. Now I know how to do mine... Dave
you can pick up dash pod from ebay and interior paint from color bond .I used color bond in a pick up i used to have.
