I am currently waiting for my 2"X2" samples of a variety of colors and textures of carpet (cut pile, and 2 different kinds of pile).

The carpet comes already molded to fit, and with Jute backing. The stuff I removed had a layer of "tar paper" underneath it. Do I need that tar paper, or just jute?

Is the tar paper just an extra sound deadening material?

Is this a cosmetic question or technical

I always figured the Tar Paper was just extra sound deadening, part of the Interior Decor Option. I've pulled it out of all my cars.

I have too. :D That stuff is nasty!!! Some has had to be scraped off with a plaster knife, but most just pulls up.

If I need more sound deadener, I will use a brush-on or roll-on...

It's for sound deadening. I bought some newer style material for my '73. It's a little like dynomat.

I despise the roll on type sound deadener. It's the worst thing in the world if you ever need to do any sheet metal work, drill holes, etc... I vote for dynamat. None of my hotrods ever had any of that sissy stuff though. The engine is supposed to be so loud no amount of insulation will drown it out!!! :p

This stuff is pretty good too.

Was out my buddies house, he just bought his first car back, full chassis something or other, (yes I do speak to him on his choice of cars) Old owners put the dynmat on floor, seemed to hold up ok, it's a roller, so I don't know about difference on noise. Weight, don't have to worry on weight! Very lite, bout the time you start running low 5's you will worry more on lunch and the weight of it! Did look an feel sorta nice, but i still prefer the alum works.

I just put down new insulation in my car and removed all of the tar paper. The product looks a lot like dynamat, but a whole lot cheaper. It is called FatMat, bought it on eBay, 100 square feet was $100 plus shipping, about $20. Where as dyamat is $199 for 36 square feet, so this is about 3 times as much product for half the costs. I used less than half and did the entire floor from the top of the floorboard where it meets the fire wall all the way to the backseat bracing. I also doubled it under the backseat area to the backseat footwell. Much quieter than the tar paper for sure. And unlike dynamat which comes in (4) 3 foot x 3 foot sheets, this comes on two rolls approximately 18 inches wide, real easy to work with, just roll out what you need, cut to fit, peel the backing and stick down and roll/push it to the shape of the floor.

Would some of the hardwood floor foam that is waterproof do the same thing? It's about $25 at HomeDepot... I also was looking at the shower undermat all rubber, looks a little harder to work with for the same price sold by the foot...any other products?

Do you need anything other than the carpet/jute at all? Doesn't most of the carpet you buy come with jute backing?

I figured I would put that down and be done with it.

If there is a need for some other layer, please tell me what it is and what it's purpose is, and I will find an appropriate material...:hmmm:

Maybe Dynamat if your worried about sound or insulation, I didn't replace mine with anything on any Maverick I've ever replaced the carpet on.

My engine is very loud, and I have no radio, so I am not worried about sound insulation.

So, do I need that 3rd layer of insulation?

The other nice benefit to the Dynamat or the much cheaper Fat Mat besides sound damping is it helps to keep the heat from radiating into the car as well. I find that important since I live in Florida and the car was never equipped with A/C.
